		What became clear through interacting with the youth concerned in Diepkloof was the cardinal role that the identity of being a "comrade" played in respondents' understanding of the role of political organisations and their motivations for becoming involved in "struggle".
		Activist youth in Diepkloof were in fact the key agents responsible for hunting down well known gangsters in the area such as the Kabasas, and the Jackrollers.
		Key to understanding the willingness of Diepkloof organised youth participation in political violence is their prime identity as "comrade youth" whose role was to protect the community from physical and moral threat.

		Paton was a great admirer of Hofmeyr, a man who dared to tell his fellow Afrikaners that they must give up "thinking with the blood," and "maintain the essential value of human personality as something independent of race or color." Paton wrote to Hofmeyr and asked him for a job.
		To his surprise, he was offered a job as principal of Diepkloof Reformatory, a huge prison school for delinquent fl boys, on the edge of Johannesburg.
		He worked at Diepkloof for ten years, and though it was certainly a fertile period, at the end of it Paton felt so strongly that he needed a change, that he sold his life insurance policies to finance a prison-study trip that took him to Scandinavia, England, and the United States.

		What is less widely known is that Paton was principal of Diepkloof Reformatory near Soweto for the thirteen years from July 1935 to June 1948.
		These were the worst days of institutionalisation, especially within the reformatory system in South Africa, with the dialogue between adults and youngsters being largely mediated through the ponderous rules and machinery of the place.
		He took great risks at Diepkloof by saying what he had to say to the boys, not as individuals which would have been almost impossible, but through the changes he made to rules and routines which affected them as a group of six hundred.
