Modern urban mass transit systems like metros and EMUs (Electrical Multiple Units) involve not only high traffic density and frequency, with large numbers of passengers carried in often-crowded conditions, but they frequently have extensive sections of track underground.
On electric locomotives, batteries are used to raise and lower the pantograph to connect the overhead catenary and also to supply emergency power as back-up for the low voltage system.
With both EMUs and electric locomotives, emergency power is required for systems such as lighting and air-conditioning, computing, communication and door control.
