  Multiple unit
A multiple unit is a type of train where the traction is supplied by driving bogies under one or more carriages of the (usually very short) train.
Most multiple units are powered either by a diesel engine driving the wheels through a gearbox (a diesel multiple unit, or DMU), or by electric motors, receiving their power through a live rail or overhead wire (an electric multiple unit or EMU).
In North America, multiple units are not common (and diesel multiple units almost non existent).

 Transporteon.com -- Diesel locomotive
Diesel locomotives vary in the form of transmission used to convey the power from a diesel engine (or engines) to the wheels.
Diesel trains or locomotives that use this are called diesel-mechanical and began to appear (although limited in power) even before the first world war which saw a number of simplex diesel systems built for the war, a small number of which survive and are still operational today.
A complete HST set was originally designated as a Class 253 or 254 diesel multiple unit (DMU), but due to the frequent exchanges between sets the power cars were reclassified as locomotives and given class number 43.

Diesel two-strokes are ideal for such applications because of their high power density--with twice as many power strokes per crankshaft revolution compared to a four-stroke, they are capable of producing much more power per displacement.
Diesel or diesel fuel is a specific fractional distillate of fuel oil (mostly petroleum) that is used as fuel in a diesel engine invented by German engineer Rudolf Diesel.
Diesel is generally simpler to refine than gasoline and often costs less (although price fluctuations sometimes mean that the inverse is true; for example, the cost of diesel traditionally rises during colder months as demand for heating oil, which is refined much the same way, rises).

Diesel multiple unit - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
DMU classification is subdivided into the form of the transmission: Diesel Mechanical Multiple Unit has a mechanical transmission; Diesel Hydraulic Multiple Unit has a hydraulic transmission; Diesel Electrical Multiple Unit has an electrical transmission.
More rugged than units strictly designed for operation on light rail, DMU systems can be safely operated within freight rail corridors, though safety regulations necessitated by the use of heavier trains in North America generally prevent this, requiring that they be operated on separate tracks in North America.
DMUs see widespread use in the United Kingdom, the Sprinter family of trains (not related to the similarly named German or Dutch units) dominated the network for many years, along with DMUs from the Pacer family.

Diesel Multiple Units   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The Diesel Multiple Unit or DMU served a different need from the 'suburban' EMUs, they were seen as a viable low cost alternative to a loco and coach for branch line working or as a high speed inter-city unit.
Electric multiple units were already in widespread use throughout the country in the more built up areas, some of these services dated back to the 1890s although most of the existing stock dated from the 1930s.
These diesel units proved successful and many of the units built at this time remained in service into the 1990s, a few made it into the new Millennium (I understand that some had their engines removed for use in the 'second generation' Class 142 rail-bus units of the 1980s).

But hardly had the diesel railcar been declared dead when it came back to life in a flurry of proposals for new passenger rail starts with DMU equipment, together with supplier proposals for a variety of new designs for the North American market.
With two new-starts for DMU equipment firmly committed and several others close to moving ahead, a new era for the DMU in North America may be at hand.
DMU equipment is specified for the 8.3-mile line, although the NPS will also entertain proposals for alternative-fuel vehicles.

It is powered by an on-board diesel engine on one of the cars and consistes of two or more cars with a provision for the driver on either end of the train set.
The transmission of the power from the diesel engine to the wheels is done by converting the mechanical energy into electrical energy (hence the electrical in its nomenclature) and feeding the electrical energy to traction motors on the wheels.
On electrified territorry, the alternative mode of (rail) transport is the Electrical Multiple Unit (EMU) which is similar in construction, except that it does not carry a diesel engine and is dependent on the electric supply for traction.

The United States is experiencing a revival of interest in diesel multiple unit (DMU) passenger railcars.
This paper quantifies the emissions into a region from diesel multiple units and the electricity generation for the electric rail modes, for oxides of nitrogen (NOx, an ozone precursor), particulate matter (PM), volatile organic compounds (VOCs, an ozone precursor), carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO2).
This paper concludes that emissions from diesel multiple units and electric rail modes are not dramatically different, on a per seat-mile basis, and the exact comparison will depend on the cleanliness of the electricity generation and the type of diesel multiple unit consist.

Wireless streetcar gains momentum [Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen]
Known as diesel multiple unit cars (DMUs), these cousins of the electric streetcars are making inroads partially because they bring down the initial cost of building new transit lines by about 20 per cent by eliminating overhead wires and other electrical gear.
The first diesel multiple unit light rail system in North America was Ottawa's O-Train, which began service in 2001 over a little-used Canadian Pacific Railway line in the city's west end, serving Carleton University.
The result is that the initial cost advantage of the diesel multiple unit is lost over a long period of time due to high life-cycle and operating costs, not to mention the uncertainty of fuel prices.

The Rail Diesel Car, also known as the RDC or Budd Car, was a series of self-propelled diesel passenger trains produced by the Budd company of Philadelphia between 1949 and 1962.
One of the keys to the design of the Budd RDC units was their ability to be linked together with other similar units to operate as a single train under the control of one driver.
However the reduction in diesel engine size during World War II due to their development for use in tanks, made the Budd company believe that underfloor diesel power was finally viable.
