Ditonus - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The ratio between three ditoni and diapason is 128/125, which is called diesis.
In a constructed scale the discrepancy of the diesis would be solved by letting the three ditoni which subtend the entire diapason be slightly unequal, then one or two of the three ditoni would have a ratio of 5:4, but not all three.
A ditonus is also called a major third, but notice that here it has been defined as a simple ratio, such as is used in just intonation.

 Re: triadic diesis??!!
Sometimes the term "diesis" points to a specific integer ratio: thus the "Lesser Diesis" is the difference between a pure 2:1 octave and three pure 5:4 major thirds, equal to 128:125 or about 41.06 cents.
Often the use of the term "diesis" implies an interval somewhere in the range of around 35-70 cents, while a smaller interval might be called a "comma" or "kleisma" or "schisma" or "diaschisma" -- although usages are not always consistent.
The term "enharmonic diesis" often refers to this kind of diesis in a regular temperament: it is the difference, for example, between Db and C# (a difference tempered out in the special case of 12-tone equal tempermanet, where these notes are mapped identically).

 Diesis Akis [English]
Diesis is a new Italian Company, located near Perugia, that specializes in loudspeakers, floorstanders, to be more precise.
For example, their speakers are fully CE compliant, which means they make use of Speakon Neutrik connectors (though a pair of traditional posts is hidden behind two wood caps) and the drivers are protected by a rigid front grid, so that children can't damage them.
Roberto Spera of Diesis claims a large number of commercial loudspeakers isn't truly "HiFi" because the frequency response (in room) is monotonically and fastly decreasing at the highs.

Onelist Tuning Digest # 483 message 26, (c)2000 by Joe Monzo
Great Diesis, the defect of 3 major Thirds from an Octave, the interval between C# and Db in the meantone temperament, 3Td = C
From the 'practical' point of view of "trying to analyze or render music of the Western conservatory tradition in just intonation", Paul is probably right that these 'commas' (the smallest and largest of which are actually forms of skhisma and diesis, respectively) are the only ones that need be considered.
But strictly speaking, depending on how far one takes the powers of 3 and 5 in any given 2-dimensional lattice or periodicity-block, there are all sorts of 'commas' that may come into play.

diesis | French | Dictionary & Translation by Babylon
A diesis is a musical interval, usually meaning the difference between three justly tuned major thirds (tuned in the frequency ratio 5:4) and an octave (in the ratio 2:1), equal to 128:125 or about 41.06 cents.
In 1/4 comma meantone the diesis retains its value of 128:125, and in other meantone tunings the defect from an octave, whatever it is, from three major thirds is the diminished second, sometimes also called a diesis.
It is then the interval involved between pairs of notes which are enharmonic in equal temperament; for instance the interval between E and F♭, however large that is, is a diesis.

 diesis
Diesis is a term which has been used so variously at different times in history that it requires 7 separate definitions here.
For example, the "undecimal diesis" has the ratio 33:32 and is ~53.27294323 cents, and indicates the intonational difference represented by the accidental ^ in Monzo's use of 72-edo to accompany the JustMusic Prime-Factor Notation (AKA "HEWM notation) in notating the pitches F : F^.
The intonational difference indicated by this diesis may be notated in HEWM with either the simplified 72-edo form, which is the same ^ as above, or in the more complicated JI form, by the combination >+ which follows the ratios strictly.

Bill Alves - The Just Intonation System of Nicola Vicentino   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Like the chromatic semitone, the enharmonic diesis may be either major, which would be the same size as the minor semitone, or minor, which would be one-half of that interval.
Vicentino also consciously strays from Boethius, his principal model for the definitions of the genera, in stating that the major diesis of the enharmonic genus may be split into two minor dieses, thus forming an extra interval within the tetrachord.
In his archicembalo tuning the minor diesis varies in size from 13 to 65 cents, so that the comma would not be a constant interval.

Order of the Great Diesis   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
The Great Diesis is a ratio that bridges the gap between the physical and spiritual worlds...the respective domains of time and vibration, whose difference is best expressed in music theory.
Utilizing the Great Diesis as a whole number ratio, all of the truly harmonic partials (overtones) of any complex vibration can be sorted, collected, measured, and compared, providing a much more accurate way of searching for harmonic content.
The Great Diesis as a "fundamental frequency" serves as the keynote that originates and unifies all of the diverse but harmonically related overtones of the vibrational spectrum.

Tonalsoft Encyclopaedia of Tuning - The measurement of Aristoxenus's Divisions of the Tetrachord (c)1999-2004 by Joe ...
That the interval between _parhypate_ and _hypate_ cannot be less than an enharmonic diesis is obvious, since the enharmonic diesis is the smallest of all melodic intervals: that it too will increase to double the size remains to be shown.
Comparing this with his earlier definition of the 'chromatic diesis' as '1/3-tone', we find it to be ~5.865 cents smaller, the same amount by which we found our 'enharmonic diesis' to be less than an exact '1/4-tone'.
It is obvious from this table, where the 'hemiolic chromatic diesis' is slightly larger than the 'semitone' ('limma'), that Aristoxenus's calculations break down in describing the shades of chromatic, particularly confusing the 'relaxed' and 'hemiolic'.

 12-edo, 12-tone equal-temperament, 12-tET
The unison-vector tempered out here is the "major diesis" of ratio 648/625 = 2,3,5-monzo [3, 4, -4 > = ~62.5 cents in JI; thus, in any tuning of the diminished family (among the others are 8, 16, 24, and 28-edo) the diminished-9th is the same pitch as the octave.
As composers sought new means of organizing musical pitches, the desire grew to explore these "new" temperament families and to modulate from one to another, a procedure which is facilitated by 12-edo's membership in so many different families.
Thus, when both the syntonic-comma and the diesis are used as unison-vectors, and the geometry of the 5-limit lattice is closed to show an accurate representation of 12-edo's approximation of 5-limit just-intonation, the spiral which forms the circle-of-5ths connects the four separate circles which form augmented triads.

The Bohlen-Pierce Site: 271 Tone BP Scale
We have already identified the small BP diesis a = D - d of 6.99 cents as one of the mini-intervals that the scale consists of, and its complementary interval b = d - a (7.20 cents).

The "small link", for instance, with its 97.866 cents differs only by a fraction of a cent from 14-times the small diesis (97.865 cents), but in the sense of this investigation, this is just accidental.

of the diesis interval are all cast in a2, note-against-note, "first-species" counterpoint, each illustration presenting a sharpened tone in the 2d of its 3 sonorities.
The leading-tone diesis would be 41/40: 42% as compared with 48% for the 1/9-tone ratio 74/72 (=37/36), and similarly perceived as a melodic semitone rather than as a wide unison.
In such a construal, a sruti could be understood, like Marchetto's diesis, as the difference between consecutive strings, marks, or frets on a tuning instrument (e.g., of the vina variety).

Marchettus, the cadential diesis, and neo-Gothic tunings
In medieval theory, the term diesis is sometimes used as a synonym for the usual diatonic semitone or limma; in ancient Greek theory, it often refers to the enharmonic diesis, an interval equal to half this size, or in Pythagorean tuning about 2/9-tone (around 45.11 cents).
However this may be, Marchettus explains that the usual limma or mi-fa semitone represents "two parts" of a tone, and the usual apotome "three parts." In his system, as in the conventional Pythagorean one, these two unequal semitones together form a 9:8 whole-tone.
The supercompact cadential diesis is equal literally to 1/5-tone, about 41.38 cents; and the extra-large "chromatic semitone" to 4/5-tone, about 165.52 cents (as it happens, very close to 11:10, as some JI enthusiasts might note).
