A diet — and I use the word in its larger context of what we habitually eat, not just a temporary regimen of weight reduction — a diet, if it is to be maintained, must not only be objectively healthy but must also both appeal and satisfy.
In an effort to eliminate carbohydrates almost entirely from the diet, not only are bread, potatoes, rice and all forms of sugar off-limits, but even fresh fruits and vegetables are slashed to a minimum.
It's the diets which are somehow based on -- or at least allow -- one's favorite foods which have a chance of surviving for the number of months required to accomplish something.

JIMMY AKIN.ORG: The Diet Of Worms
A "diet" is an assembly and "Worms" is a German place-name pronounced with a /v/ sound on the front of the word.
Today--May 25, is the anniversary of the Edict of Worms, which was issued in 1521 against Martin Luther and his writings.
A bit of pedantry about pronunciation: Not only is Worms not "worms," but Diet is not "diet." It ought to be "dee-et." Not that there's any real hope of getting folks to stop saying "diet of worms," of course.

The worms of our political oligarchy - and it is indeed an oligarchy of contemptible plebeians, supported and sustained by confiscatory taxes - also wish to "do good" by imposing more controls on the country and its citizens.
From their perspective, we are the worms, they own us, and we can be "crushed and wronged" without limit, consequence, or fear of retribution.
It was a presumption that men rejected over two hundred and fifty years ago when they decided they had had enough of their small and burdensome tyrants, and threw off the yokes and shackles from their minds, necks and ankles.
