Dietrich von Bern is a figure from German medieval legend, based on Theodoric the Great, the historical king of the Ostrogoths.
In the Hildebrandslied Dietrich flees from Odoacer (who is vanquished by the historic Theodoric the Great) and lives for thirty years at the court of Attila the Hun.
Dietrich also figures in the "Wormser Rosengarten" (Rose Garden of Worms), the Epos of Biterolf, of Goldemar, of Ecke, Sigenot and Laurin.

THE HEROIC SAGA-CYCLE OF DIETRICH OF BERN - F. E. Sandbach
Dietrich's unsuccessful campaign appears to have been originally conceived as taking place in the twentieth year of his exile, and as ending in a defeat -- with which was connected, perhaps at a later stage, an old tradition of the death of Attila's two sons.
Dietrich was, however, not always so successful in his combats with the giants, for there existed an old and widespread tradition that he once fell into their power and was held captive until rescued by his followers.
Dietrich's fame continues to attract one hero after another to Bern, the arrival of Dietleib providing the opportunity of working in the story of Biterolf and Dietleib, and the duel of the latter with Walter of Aquitaine.

Dietrich of Verona,Theodorich the Great) and Etzel (Attila), and (2) the cycle of Hugdietricb, Wolfdietrich and Ortnit, which like the Nibelungen saga, was probably of Franconian origin.
Dietrich von Bern, the central figure of the first and more important group, was the ideal type of German medieval hero, and, under more favorable literary conditions, he might have become the centre of an epic more nationally German than even the Nibelungenlied itself.
Similar in character are the adventures of Dietrich with the giants Ecke (Eckenlied) and Sigenot, with the dwarf Goldemar, and the deeds of chivalry he performs for queen Virginal (Dietricks erste Ausfahrt)all of these romances being written in the fresh and popular tone characteristic of the wandering singers or Spielteute.

Administrative/Biographical history: Dietrich von Bern was a heroic figure of Germanic legend, apparently derived from Theodoric the Great, an Ostrogothic king of Italy who reigned between 493 and 526.
Dietrich's exploits were related in several south German songs preserved in 'Das Heldenbuch' ('The Heroes Book').
Scope and content/abstract: Manuscript fragment, late 14th century: Virginal or Dietrichs Ausfahrt (Dietrich's Departure), written in stanzas, in the so-called 'Bernerton'.

As both hero and dragon-like monster, Dietrich embodies the dialectic at work in all heroic epic: Even as the hero's prowess protects society from external threats, his frequently uncontrollable passions threaten the social order from within.
