Topic: Different Light

Reading on Color & Light, Part I
The electromagnetic spectrum, which encompasses the visible region of light, extends from gamma rays with wave lengths of one hundredth of a nanometer to radio waves with wave lengths of one meter or greater.
Orange light with a wavelength of 620 nanometers is composed of photons with energy of 2 eV.
The region of visible light in wavelengths shown as a linear arrangement (a) and as a circle (b) as conceived by Sir Isaac Newton.

 Howstuffworks "How Light Bulbs Work"
Before the invention of the light bulb, illuminating the world after the sun went down was a messy, arduous, hazardous task.
Light bulbs are ranked by their power -- the amount of light they put out in a certain period of time (measured in watts).
Incandescent light bulbs give off most of their energy in the form of heat-carrying infrared light photons -- only about 10 percent of the light produced is in the visible spectrum.

 Howstuffworks "How Light Works"
This proved conclusively that white light is a mixture of colors, or a mixture of light of different frequencies.
When a light wave hits an object, what happens to it depends on the energy of the light wave, the natural frequency at which electrons vibrate in the material and the strength with which the atoms in the material hold on to their electrons.
In absorption, the frequency of the incoming light wave is at or near the vibration frequency of the electrons in the material.

Creative Gems and Jewelry - About light and Gemstones
Light is a form of electromagnetic energy emited from a point source, and spreading as a wave front in all directions, in a spherical form.
The traveling speed of this front is the speed of light, which is 300,000 Km per second in vacuum, and its slowed by 25% when travelling through water, and 33% when through glass.
If we use different light sources with a different spectral quality, the color of the same object may appear to us slightly different every time.

A100 at IUN, Fall 1996: Lecture 4.2: The Nature of Light
Since light is the only way Astrophysicists have of studying these objects, they have had to be very clever and resourceful to try and extract the most information out of the light they can gather.
Light waves also have a wavelength and this is precisely what distinguishes the different types of light that we talked about.
So the fact that light doesn't travel instantaneously between two places combined with the fact that objects in the Universe are so far apart make it so that when we look at celestial objects we are seeing them the way the looked in the past.

Then there's disability--when a light is so bright you honestly cannot see someone coming toward you or details like stairs, a rock, or ice on the road.
If you are using correct light levels, minimizing glare and using uniformity, then you haven't overlit places--and the light is not bouncing off the pavement and going up into the sky.
How do you light a prison where the guard is always invisible and the prisoner doesn't know where the guard is? Light can act as a barrier--the more light you have on a surface, the harder it is to see through it.

 Laser Light Scattering
Since the signal from the light-scattering detector is directly proportional to the molecular mass of the protein times the concentration (mg/ml), by combining this signal with that from a concentration detector (refractive index or absorbance) it is possible to measure the molecular mass of each peak coming off the column.
In dynamic light scattering one measures the time dependence of the light scattered from a very small region of solution, over a time range from tenths of a microsecond to milliseconds.
These fluctuations in the intensity of the scattered light are related to the rate of diffusion of molecules in and out of the region being studied (Brownian motion), and the data can be analyzed to directly give the diffusion coefficients of the particles doing the scattering.

 UUJA: By a Different Light
We live by the light of the Chanukkah candles, light which, by religious law, the Jews are forbidden to use for anything except enjoyment.
You do not study or work by the gentle light of the candles in the menorah -- their light is a reminder that sometimes our job is simply to watch in gratitude and awe.
However, the light we enjoy is always that of one more candle than the days of Chanukkah we have celebrated, for there is always the light of the shammes, the servant candle which does the work of bringing light to the others.

If you look at the way in which artists used light to craft their subject matter, to capture the constantly changing essence of natural light and commit it to the canvas, it is possible to see how influential their art was in creating people's expectations of light.
The introduction of color to symbolize different angles and levels of light saturation is used abundantly by the Impressionists to capture nature.
Since the introduction of artificial light was integral to everyone's lives, it was of interest to the general public, as well as scientists and artists.

 The Growing Edge - Light
During the shorter and darker days of winter, many growers use artificial lights to increase the intensity of light (for photosynthesis) or to expand the daylight length.
While the sun radiates the full spectrum (wavelength or color of light) suitable for plant life, different types of artificial lighting are selected for specific plant varieties and optimum plant growth characteristics.
Different groups of plants respond in physically different ways to various wavelengths of radiation.

You probably have noticed that a light appears to be brighter when you are close to it, and dimmer when you are farther away.
Using a Light Sensor, you can determine how the brightness of light varies with distance from the source and compare that result to a mathematical model.
Regardless of the way light is measured, the same relative changes with distance are observed, and that is what you will study today.

 Electromagnetic Spectrum - Introduction
Radiation is energy that travels and spreads out as it goes-- visible light that comes from a lamp in your house or radio waves that come from a radio station are two types of electromagnetic radiation.
The only difference between the various types of electromagnetic radiation is the amount of energy found in the photons.
The vertical illustration of the different regions of the EM spectrum and their common uses was done by Design at Work for the curriculum supplement "Human Physiology in Space" by Barbara F. Lujan and Ronald J. White, 1994.

HHMI News: Illuminating How Plants Adapt to Light
The exposure to different light wavelengths was intended to reveal variation in signaling pathways known to be sensitive to those wavelengths.
To detect genetic variation, the researchers compared the growth responses to different light conditions in the naturally varying strains to those of known laboratory-induced mutants in the receptor genes.
Additional studies revealed that the mutated phytochrome A in the LM-2 variant was “tuned” differently, resulting in a molecule that was 100-fold less sensitive to the far-red end of the spectrum.

Different Light - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Different Light is an album by The Bangles released in January 1986.
The front cover of the album's most U.S. cassette pressings only showed 12 (out of 16) of the "different" snapshots, eliminating the third column to best fit the rectangular layout of cassettes - also the layout used by the songbook edition.
The vinyl LP back cover looks much like the front, except the 16 different snapshots lie against a blue canvas background and the songs are listed in paragraph format at the very top.

A light bulb no longer emits light when the filament is finally "burned up!" This can be heard when you shake a burned out bulb.
