The Daily Vault Album Reviews : Different Stages
The remaining two discs of Different Stages focus on the band's touring for Counterparts and the disappointing Test For Echo, pulling many of the selections from a show in the Chicagoland area.
Oh, longtime fans, relax - Different Stages is still a great picture of what Rush is like live, and hearing the band in two different stages of their career makes for a great package.
But Different Stages is a bit of a letdown when compared to some of their previous works.

SBC: Report from NHC '98, Part 2
A rectangular opening lined with wire "feelers" as shown in the fourth photograph is used to knock the hop cones from the bines.
As the harvested material is passed up one belt and dumped onto the bottom of the next, the heavier hop cones travel up the belts differently than the lighter leaves, and the two are separated.
As the sixth photograph shows, some of the hops we saw were still in the early stages of development, and resembled a flower much more so than a cone.

This album holds up very well 23 years later, with its sharp guitar lines and Geddy's increasingly complex work, not to mention the range and talent that Neil immediately showed.
The album was a commercial disaster, but I think it holds up very well after all the years.
At its best, this album captured the power and feel of their best albums and the songwriting had come back to life.

On their fourth live album since their inception in the early '70s, Rush's three-CD Different Stages: Live is similar in approach and feel to their first in-concert release, 1976's All the World's a Stage.
Instead of overdubbing and cleaning up the performances as they did on their last two live albums (1981's Exit...Stage Left and 1988's A Show of Hands), the tracks are left raw and rocking.
Even though no material from the mid- to late-'80s is included, Different Stages: Live will delight Rush's adoring throng of fans.

EIGHT mountain sorties, culminating in three difficult climbing stages in Baguio, provide the challenge for 90 foreign and local riders seeking the greatest honor and the biggest purse in one of Asia's major cycling events, now named the Marlboro Centennial Tour.
After two stages across the broad, flat lands of Central and Northern Luzon, the cyclists face the supreme test - three consecutive days of moutain climbing the Cordilleras - which will determine this year's champion.
In the 12th stage, the riders blaze through 160 kilometers of highways and winding roads under the heat of El Nio, then unleash whatever they can still muster in the last 35 kilometers for the steep climb to Baguio City through Naguilian Road.

Nevertheless, people might be surprised at the level of pride drummer Lars Ulrich expressed about the new album sounding like the Spice Girls, coming as it does from a band renowned for carving out a personalized niche in the domain of "Speed Metal," (even their logo has literally lost its "cutting edge").
To be fair, response to the new releases was mixed, and even the most die-hard purists admitted the albums still contained "that Metallica bite." But many others decided to disown the band for life.
It might be ironic that Metallica is quite different from the days when Burton was alive and that replacement bassist Jason Newsted has been with the band several years longer than his famed predecessor.

Perfect Night, by Lou Reed | Kevin McGowin | Reviews | Oyster Boy Review 09 | May 1998
At first glance, it may seem an unlikely stretch to review a musical album as "poetry," especially when the album in question is a live one that consists almost entirely of previously released and/or printed material.
And in the context of a "live" album, sparsely recorded in an acoustically-based single take, a different element is involved though the musical idiom and vocal inflections, not dissimilar to, say, Allen Ginsberg's later recordings of his own poetry with occasional musical accompaniment.
The album as a whole shows that aging "rockers" can take old material to new levels of relevance by a marked change in tone or phrasing, and that the result need not be rehash but a different poetry altogether.

Their next effort, 1976's 2112, proved to be their breakthrough release: a futuristic concept album based on the writings of Ayn Rand, it fused the elements of the trio's sound -- Lee's high-pitched vocals, Peart's epic-length compositions and Lifeson's complex guitar work -- into a unified whole.
Fans loved it -- 2112 was the first in a long line of gold and platinum releases -- while critics dismissed it as overblown and pretentious: either way, it established a formula from which the band rarely deviated throughout the duration of their career.
As reported, the album was recorded in Toronto, and was produced by the band with Paul Northfield (Hole, Marilyn Manson) engineering.

From that point on, their albums of the 1980s tended to incorporate more keyboards and stuck to accessible style that began with Permanent Waves, even to the point that their recordings in the later 1980s and 1990s have sometimes been derided as being too mainstream.

First it's the chamber music and synthesized echo which are always present, but to different stages of effect, then the awesome intensity coming from the guitar, overdubbed at times, but easily verifiable in the traditional metal sense.
Then, of course, we've got the singer, who's not dissimilar to many female fronted Goth/fl metal bands, but it's her delivery that grows quickly from a soothing whisper to a fear-inflicting scream that'll captivate your nervous system before returning to a calming effect at the start of the next song.
The album ends quietly with "Dead Words," a highly orchestrated piece led out slowly with piano before fading into the fast approaching darkness, an antithesis to how "All Little Angels" began nine songs earlier.
