Differential (mechanics) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Differential mechanisms possess two degrees of freedom (DOF), and the state of the mechanism depends on two constraints.
The sensibility of the computer controlled differential is also limited by the time delay caused by sensors and the response time of the actuators.
There are many claims to the invention of the differential gear, but it is likely that it was known, at least in some places, in ancient times.

The differential pinion (drive) gears are mounted on the pinion shaft and rotate with the shaft (4).
Differential side gears (driven gears) are meshed with the pinion gears and turn with the differential housing and ring gear as a unit (5).
So most importantly, with the side gear and the differential case turning at the same speed, the other wheel is forced to rotate in the same direction and at the same speed as the differential case.

GEARED TRANSMISSIONS This invention relates to transfer gearing for transmitting power between first and second members rotating about parallel axes in automotive transmissions, for example in which power from the output shaft of a main gearbox must be transmitted to a pair of propeller shafts respectively extending fore and aft of the vehicle.
The kinematic forces acting on the intermediate gears coupled with the elasticity of the materials of the gear assemblies means that in reality one of the intermediate gears tends to be forced inwards towards the plane of the input/output shafts, whilst the other intermediate gear tends to be forced outwards away from that plane.
Gear 14 is formed as a ring gear having internal helical splines engaging complementary splines 42 on the sleeve 40.

Differential (mechanics) -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Differentials are typically composed of a gear mechanism in which a ring gear receives input power, which is transferred to two side gears by means of usually two opposing central (A gear with a small number of teeth designed to mesh with a larger wheel or rack) pinion gears on a common shaft.
This "differential" was actually a (An outer gear that revolves about a central sun gear of an epicyclic train) planetary gearset placed next to an open front differential, not an integrated system.
Fully integrated active differentials are used on the 2005 (A form of address for a man) MR (additional info and facts about Ferrari F430) Ferrari F430 and on all four wheels in the (additional info and facts about Acura RL) Acura RL.

Gears should either be put between the girders supporting the axles or very close to the girders on the outside of the girders.
Figure 8.7 illustrates a sample LEGO geartrain that achieves a gear ratio of 243:1 through the use of five ganged pairs of 8-tooth to 24-tooth gear combinations (this gear ratio may be overly high for a robot drive).
For example, if a vehicle with a differential gear had a drive axle spinning at X revolutions per minute(rpm), the differential housing would be rotating at X rpm as well, so long as the vehicle is moving directly forward or backward.

The driveshaft is connected to and drives the pinion gear, which in-turn drives the ring gear at a reduced rate and at a 90 degree angle from the driveshaft.
This is the term used to describe the "clearance" between the ring and pinion gears and is usually measured in thousandths-of-an-inch by a dial indicator.
The drive side of the ring gear is the side of the tooth that is contacted when the vehicle is accelerating / The coast side is the side of the tooth on the ring gear that is contacted when the vehicle is decelerating (during engine-braking).

Gearing is the key to delivering useable power from an engine through the drivetrain and to the ground.
The easiest way to check the differential gear ratio in any rear wheel or four-wheel-drive truck is to lift the rear end of the vehicle with a jack and physically rotate the rear tires one complete revolution while counting the number of revolutions that the driveshaft makes.
A gear-driven or torque-sensing differential is a gear-driven LSD that distributes power equally while still allowing for difference in wheel-speed, as long as both of the drive wheels have an equal amount of traction.

 Automobile Differential Gears
When the car is moving in a straight line, the differential gears do not rotate with respect to their axes.
One problem with an automotive differential is that if one wheel is held stationary, the counterpart wheel turns at twice its normal speed as can be seen by examining the complete scheme of automobile differential.
The gear train in an automobile differential is a common application of gears, but often misunderstood by the lay public.

Gear noise is more prominent between 30 to 40 mph (48 to 64 km/h) and 50 to 60 mph (80 to 96 km/h).
Abnormal gear noise is quite rare and if present it usually originates from scoring of the ring and drive pinion gear as a result of insufficient or improper lubrication of the axle assembly.

The section of the locking gear assembly that is located near the front of the car is designed so that a selector mechanism can 'freeze up' either side of the differential gear, or let them both spin.
The gear selector mechanism (green) chooses which side to lock up by using a second differential gear to measure the difference between the torque being applied by the motor, and the torque being transfered to the ground via the rear axle.
As the difference in input motion on the green differential grows with respect to the output motion on the rear axle, a torque is applied to the differential body, which is transfered to the spring-loaded selector arm.

As the pinion gear diameter is reduced, the ring gear thickness is increased to compensate, until a point is reached where the manufacturer moves the ring gear mounting surface on the carrier so the ring gear does not have to get very thick for increasingly higher number ratios.
You have to "wrench" on the differential quite often, and without an impact wrench that would mean the differential would need to be held in place by a soft jawed vice as depicted in the FSM.

After I reassembled the unit, the differential gear (the inner gear that slides onto the axle) would not drop all the way down to the postion it is supposed to be in.
Problem is, I can't move the inner pinion gears to align them with the differential gear, as moving the inner pinion gear causes the outer pinion gear to move.
The gear that is keyed onto the axle stays on the axle, it is not assembled into the diff first.
