M78 is the brightest diffuse reflection nebula in the sky.

After the Great Nebula in Andromeda, the Orion Nebula is probably the most famous.
Although commonly classified as the brightest diffuse nebula in the sky, visible to the naked eye, it is, in fact, both an emission and reflection nebula, with hydrogen (mostly) and oxygen gas shining due to being excited by the ultra violet radiation from the central star in Orion's sword.
To the unaided eye, M42 appears as a misty patch around theta Orionis, the central star of the three which form the sword of Orion.
