Dig Dug Deeper has only one single-player gameplay mode that's very similar to the original arcade game--there are no multiplayer modes or secondary modes that offer variations on the main game.
As you dig through the underground area and encounter enemies, you can either use Dig Dug's trusty drill or use objects found within the environment--rocks, poisonous gas, and lava can all be used to kill the enemies if you use a little strategy in the way you dig.
In the end, Dig Dug Deeper's core gameplay is still basically the same as that of the original Dig Dug, which may not be a bad thing for hard-core fans of the original arcade game.

Dig Dug II, in which Dig is trying to irrigate a series of islands, and once again finds himself fending off Pookas and Fygars above ground, able to dispatch them by either pumping them up (as in the original Dig Dug), or by submerging a portion of the island containing the offending critters.
Numerous successful adaptations of Dig Dug were made, and some of them, like the Atari 2600 version, were even easier than the arcade game, allowing a single session to be stretched out as long as a half hour or longer.

Digging around, dropping rocks, and inflating enemies was a lot more fun than I had assumed it would be, although I never really got past the weirdness.
What's great in Dig Dug is figuring out systems on the early levels for smashing all the enemies at once with a single rock - that's where the mad points *really* kick in.
OT: Dig Dug was a blast, and helped while away the hours when I was 13 and in Denver with nothing much to do (besides wander around in the city).

When I first got Dig Dug for the 2600, I was put off by how the graphics didn't match the arcade version.
As Dig Dug, you dig underground trying to (literally) blow up the bad guys.
Dig Dug has a nice balance of game play that—even considering the 2600's limitations—brings a smile to my face and remains fun to play.
