History of Plowing - History for Kids!
Basically you have to make zillions of holes in the ground to put the seeds in, and you have to loosen up the soil around those seeds so that water will get to them, and so that they will be able to grow.
One way of doing this is with just any strong stick, with a point on one end: you stick it in the ground and wiggle it around, and then drop a seed in, and you cover it loosely with dirt, then you do it again, and again, and again, all day long.
The simplest kind of plow is a digging stick with a handle on it crossways.

 Buffalo Bird Woman's Garden
I remember that when I was a little girl, the boundaries of the field were rather irregular at first; and my grandmother, Turtle, would go along the edge with her digging stick and dig up the ground to make the corners come out more nearly squared, and the sides of the field be straightened.
The field was also enlarged from year to year toward the sides; and much of this work my grandmother did with her digging stick.
A heavy stick was sharpened at one end and driven into the ground with an ax; it was loosened by working it from side to side with the hands, and withdrawn, leaving a hole about a foot deep.

It is argued that the fluting evidenced on the digging stick is indicative of the woodworking prowess of the Diamantina people.
Further, the high number of tula slugs found at most camp sites and the location of one surface cache of tula blanks suggest that not only was wood working an important subsistence skill but also one recognised via trade or exchange with their neighbours.
