Ok, the i7 isn't your run-of-the-mill digicam as it sports an MP3 player and rotating 3.0-inch LCD 'round back for use as a video player pumping simulated SRS 3D sound.

PC Plus - Digicams: the truth
If an 8mm lens on a digicam equates to a 38mm lens on a 35mm camera, simple geometry indicates that if a 35mm negative is 36mm across, the digicam's imaging area must be no wider than 8mm.
At the wider end of their zooming ranges and everyday angles of view, digicam lenses hardly need to be focussed at all.
Digicam makers can continue cramming more and more pixels into their CCDs, but until they start making the CCDs physically larger, they (and we) face diminishing returns.

SLR vs All-in-one: Which way to go?
The former high-end prosumer digicam that used to occupy the $600 to $1,200 range has been eclipsed, with most users interested in upgrading their digital camera now looking at either a Long Zoom Family digicam (generally available for between $400 and $500) or a Digital SLR.
Digicam manufacturers, on the other hand, were free to experiment, and they gradually stepped away from making boxes with lenses in the center, as was once dictated by having to move a roll of film from one side of the camera to the other.
Most digicams are dramatically faster when prefocused like this, the shutter lag often dropping from something close to a second to one or two tenths of a second.

 Review: UMAX AstraCam
And there often aren't even rechargeable batteries, which are pretty much essential for digicams, whose high current draw means they rapidly suck the life out of alkaline cells, which can't handle the high load.
Some digicam manufacturers now sell cameras whose list price is genuinely quite close to the "drive away" figure.
The AstraCam's clearly not up there with "proper" digicams, but neither does it produce the nasty, grainy, washed-out, blurry, distorted crud that you'll get from the still-capture function of cheap webcams - which are about all you'll be able to find for less than the price of an AstraCam.

Small Dog Electronics - New and Refurbished Apple / Mac Computers
If a digicam can collect millions of pixels (mega-pixel cameras) you will be able to print out images much larger than a snapshot that do not appear to be affected by the digital nature of the picture.
The high-end digicams allow you to collect images at a resolution that can be printed at a larger size with more precise detail.
Today's digicam optics are often designed in a manner that allows you to "macro" focus on small areas.

Schmidt Cassegrain telescope advice - astrophotography - digital camera adapter
The direct mounting option is available to you if your digicam lens has filter threads or if you can get an adapter for your digicam that will hold a threaded filter in front of the lens (Tiffen made such adapters for several types of digicams that lack filter threads.)
Their “DCL- 4337” is a 40mm eyepiece (shown here on the right) with both 43mm and 37mm threads at the top (manufacturers of good digicams commonly use one of these two thread diameters for filter threads).
If you can get the diameters and thread dimensions to work out for your eyepiece and digicam, the result is that you can directly mount your digicam to the top of an eyepiece.

Since my previous digicam was a 2.5MP point-and-shoot from a couple of years ago it was time to upgrade.
I know you’d like me to be more definitive but as you’ll see, whether this camera (and other current digicams as well) should be regarded as a gem or a dog depends very much on the type of shooting that you anticipate doing with it.
Until digicams can be used without having to make excuses for them (and image quality isn't typically one of those issues any longer), I'm going to remain on the other side of the fence.

But this 4th generation CCD did better than most digicams we’ve seen with high contrast scenes, and did so with a close-to 18MB file size that could be used for some great 11x14” prints.
This tiny digicam delivered some of the best exposures in contrasty situations we’ve seen, close to those delivered by high-end digital SLRs shot on raw mode and post-processed in raw software.
A scene like this taken with many digicams would have resulted in harsh highlights that would be difficult to control even in post-processing.

It's not good for marketing purposes to let it be widely known that the imaging chip in the camera you're flogging has only 1/16th the area of the standard miniature (35mm) camera that people are familiar with.
It would be no exaggeration to describe these point and shoot digicams as sub-miniature cameras.
Actually I believe that every current 2/3" format digicam has an EVF except the Olympus E-20 which is approaching end of life, so I am not sticking my neck out much with that prediction.

Most midprice digicams ($300 to $600) still have 3X optical zoom lenses -- fine for parties and portraits.
Digital SLRs use interchangeable lenses and are perfect for photo enthusiasts who already have a stash of lenses for their 35mm film SLR cameras.
Features on the Canon and Nikon SLRs range from full-manual focus, aperture and shutter speed to settings that are specific to digital photography, such as white balance, which lets you adjust the white in a photo for the truest possible white (the camera fine-tunes other colors to conform to that setting).
