Digital Data Storage - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Digital Data Storage (DDS) is a format for storing and backing up computer data on magnetic tape that evolved from Digital Audio Tape (DAT) technology, which was originally created for CD-quality audio recording.
In 1989, Sony and Hewlett Packard defined the DDS format for data storage using DAT tape cartridges.
The data transfer rate was hoped to be around 7 MB/s.

 Digital Data Storage
The cost of digital data storage has decreased to the point where digital forms are the least expensive means to store most of the information which traditionally would have been printed or microfilmed.
These goals were also chosen in cooperation with the major data storage companies, and their industry representatives, as the major component parts of a program to develop the research necessary for advanced data storage hardware and software for the next decade.
For example, one new method of recovering data from a disk is called partial-response maximum-likelihood (PRML), a sampling scheme that permits disk manufacturers to dynamically calculate the probability of a given bit of data being a 'one' or a 'zero' from a sampled electrical signal from the disk head.

This is not to say that digital data storage is unequivocally superior to analog, but it does address some of the more common problems associated with analog techniques and thus finds immense popularity in both consumer and industrial applications.
The data is then retrieved from the tape by moving the magnetized tape past another coil of wire, the magnetized spots on the tape inducing voltage in that coil, reproducing the voltage waveform initially used to magnetize the tape).
Due to the high capacity of modern data storage devices, metric prefixes are generally affixed to the unit of bytes in order to represent storage space: 1.6 Gigabytes is equal to 1.6 billion bytes, or 12.8 billion bits, of data storage capacity.

 Holographic data storage
Holographic data storage is a volumetric approach which, although conceived decades ago, has made recent progress toward practicality with the appearance of lower-cost enabling technologies, significant results from longstanding research efforts, and progress in holographic recording materials.
In the case of holographic storage, the response of the recording medium, which converts the optical interference pattern to a refractive index pattern (the hologram), is generally linear in light intensity and lacks the response threshold found in bistable storage media such as magnetic films.
For digital data holograms, the contrast of the interference pattern between object and reference beams is lower than in the plane-wave case, and the recording conditions do not produce as large an index modulation.

If he or she is not allowed to access that data on the network, then they should not be allowed to restore the data, say, to a local hard disk, which would clearly be a breach of the security policy.
What data migration provides is a “hierarchy” of data storage in the LAN environment, where the most active and recently used data resides on the fastest (and therefore most expensive) on-line storage.
Data which is accessed infrequently can be moved to slower “near-line” storage media (such as optical disk or removable hard drive) - easily accessible yet with increased access times that would be unacceptable if the data were in constant use.

FACT SHEET - ATP Program on DIGITAL DATA STORAGE
By fostering industrial alliances, the new ATP focused program on digital data storage aims to build the springboard for that kind of ambitious leap in technological capability and marketplace performance.
In a recent survey of the electronics industry's technology needs and priorities, conducted as part of the government-industry National Electronics Manufacturing Initiative, mass data storage was singled out as one of the key electronic-component technologies warranting increased emphasis in federal R&D efforts.
Shared efforts concentrating on early-stage needs and obstacles can reduce overall R&D costs and accelerate the U.S. digital data storage industry's progress toward developing technologies critical to ensuring that it will be a top performer in a worldwide market projected to grow tenfold, to $1 trillion, during the next decade.

In line with the trend towards electronic storage such as writable DVD and CD discs, the preservation of the electronic data in the storage media is essential.
Storage on digital optical media has the advantage of large capacity, fast access rate and lossless information transfer however the lifetime of this storage media is limited because of chemical and physical deterioration as well as the obsolescence of the format and playback technology.
Methods are being developed here to determine the life expectancy of various digital data storage discs as an application guideline for production and data preservation of the digital storage media.
