Digital Home Canada - Canadian Technology
Digital Cable still has not been fully adopted in Canada, which most cable companies in Canada, offering a number of digital services, while others are still in analog.
This is primarily due to a shortage in cable vision bandwidth, which in most cases prevents a full digital cable programming offering in addition to a full analog one using a single cable line.
In the meantime, Canadian cable vision companies charge a premium for digital cable services, in addition to an extra fee for rental of the digital decoder set top box, which is required.

Digital refers to the property of dealing with the discrete values rather than a continuous spectrum of values: compare analog or analogue.
The analogue to digital converter only has a certain resolution: whereas the human eye may be able to detect tens of thousands of different intensities of pure green, the CCD in a digital camera may only be capable of 256, and at a resolution of a megapixel or so.
Smoke signals are one of the oldest examples of a digital signal, where an analog "carrier" (smoke) is modulated with a blanket to generate a digital signal (puffs) that convey information.

Canadian TV -so many screens, so little worth watching.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Canadians are tired of waiting three years to see TV shows from HBO when they finally show up on network television, tired of being stuck behind the aging iron curtain of Canadian broadcast regulations and bored with the lack of choice provided by Canadian networks, all of whom are owned by the same three corporations.
I subscribed to Vidéotron's digital TV service last summer and it's specious at best to be touting "integrity" while making it illegal to get American satellite signals since digital cable seems to operate with promise as its premise, luring viewers in with exciting promos but bearing a paucity of content, original or otherwise.
Canadian digital channels have sprung up like dandelions in May, but after a few months, it's clear that promise has an expiry date and so does their programming, which seems to repeat itself endlessly while we pay enormous fees for equipment rental, service and installation.

 Digital Cable
Digital cable is a term for a type of cable digital television that delivers more channels than possible with analog cable by using video compression.
Where a cable set-top box was already required, cable DTV deployment makes little difference to the service seen by users, but allows operators to increase the carrying capacity of their networks with low marginal levels of investment.
Digital teletext is supposed to provide interactive services, but for this a separate upstream channel such as a telephone line or ethernet connection is required.

I have Digital Cable with Insight, but the only channels that are digital are the music channels, and the stuff coming out of computers at the headend for Insight, other than that I have over 100 channels of Analog.
Maybe his cable company is doing exactly what he says, it wouldn't really surprise me. The Canadian cable companies(for the most part) push new technology out faster and do things that are less greedy than the American cable companies do.
Cable shows noise, due to sateration from the amount of amplification and correction that has to happen going from head end to house, but for all in all, I will stick with cable, due to if anything happens, the cost is lower and you do not have a un-godly dish hanging off of your house.

The cable industry says the CRTC must change a policy that prevents Canadian cable companies from carrying such popular U.S. channels as HBO, ESPN, Showtime and Nickelodeon if they are to compete with the fl-market U.S. dishes, now in more than 700,000 Canadian households.
But the proposal is bitterly opposed by Canadian broadcasters who call it a "cynical cash grab" that would force cable subscribers to switch to digital service to continue watching such shows as The Sopranos, Sex and the City, and Curb Your Enthusiasm, now available on conventional Canadian cable channels.
Cable association president Janet Yale told reporters yesterday that offering U.S. channels such as HBO and Showtime as digital services in Canada would encourage fl-market dish users to switch to cable or Canadian satellite services.

With more than half of the digital channels are actually analog there is no real incentive to upgrade to digital and pay for extra STB rental fees etc. for me. When they go 90% or more digital (and preferably HDTV by then) then I will probably upgrade.

Digital Cable Margin Drivers - Increasing Retention Margins   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Cable operators could reduce the break-even penetration level by increasing their assumptions about the number of pay TV subscribers that would be lost to competition if digital technology is not deployed in the cable system.
Conceptually, this strategy could be implemented by selling a package of channels at wholesale cost and thus increasing the attractiveness of the digital cable service offering.
If such a strategy enabled cable operators to increase the retention rate to say 20% of pay subscribers, then the required break-even penetration level could be reduced to about 13% (see chart on following page).
