Digital watermarks - final report   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
The watermark, when added to an image, must be secure in the sense that no one can remove the watermark in a reasonable amount of time, even if the algorithms used to add the watermark are known, unless the hidden key used to control addition of data to the image also is known.
A digital watermark on a colour image is considered to be invisible if the human eye cannot detect the difference between the original image and the corresponding image with the watermark.
This is not the case when the issue is the destruction of watermarks in digital images, since it would not be possible for the opponent himself to check whether the watermark is destroyed or not..

Watermark - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Watermarks were first introduced in Bologna, Italy in 1282; they have been used by papermakers to identify their product, and also on postage stamps, currency, and other government documents to discourage counterfeiting.
In philately, the watermark is a key feature of the stamp, and often constitutes the difference between a common and a rare stamp.
Watermarks were nearly universal on stamps in the 19th and early 20th centuries, but generally fell out of use and are not commonly used on modern issues.

 Digital Watermarks: Tracking - WebReference.com
The term "digital watermark" is derived from the traditional watermarks that exist in high-quality letterhead and certain currency.
On letterhead, watermarks typically are not apparent to the reader, but, when held to the light, reveal the name or logo of the paper's manufacturer or the entity using the letterhead.
Just as digital watermarks in images are invisible to the unaided eye, digital watermarks on sound recordings are "completely transparent to the ear," according to ARIS Technologies, which produces MusiCode.

What is digital watermark? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
The purpose of digital watermarks is to provide copyright protection for intellectual property that's in digital format.
Unlike printed watermarks, which are intended to be somewhat visible, digital watermarks are designed to be completely invisible, or in the case of audio clips, inaudible.
And finally, the digital watermark must be robust enough so that it can withstand normal changes to the file, such as reductions from lossy compression algorithms.

Digital Watermarking | Watermark Technology | Digimarc   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Digimarc's digital watermarking technologies allow users to embed into audio, images, video and printed documents a digital code that is imperceptible during normal use but readable by computers and software.
To help illustrate the impact of a digital watermark, here is a comparison of an original image, a digitally watermarked image, and the result of an image calculation done through a Digimarc-enabled application.
Digimarc digital watermarking technology provides a persistent digital identity for various media content and is used to enhance the security of financial documents, identity documents and digital images, and support other media rights management applications.

The Richter Scale - The Digital Watermark
While not visible or audible to human senses, the watermark is robust to common signal and geometric distortions such as digital-to-analog and analog-to-digital conversion, resampling, and requantization, including printing and compression, and rotation, translation, cropping and scaling.
The watermark is composed of a bit pattern distributed throughout the data based on noise theory, and is calculated using discrete cosine transforms (I used to know what that meant).
The watermark is also close to indestructible, because it's not purely digital in nature, but a digital representation of analog data.

Digital Watermark Mobile Agents   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-18)
Digital watermarking has emerged as an enabling technology for protecting intellectual property rights of digital information.
However, the effectiveness of digital watermarking relies on the efficient detection of watermarks from huge amount of documents in cyberspace.
A digital watermark agent travels from host to host on a network and acts like a "detective" that detects watermarks and collects evidence of any misuse.

Digital watermarking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Digital watermarking can be a form of steganography, in which data is hidden in the message without the end user's knowledge.
Invisible watermarks that are unknown to the end user are steganographic.
Whereas a digital watermark can be a form of steganography, e.g., the digital watermark is hidden in plain view.

 Stereophile: Digital Audio Watermark Watch
One of the more controversial additives, "watermarking," is a process whereby data that defines permissions for a digital music track is mixed in with the music.
Digital audio playback software can then be programmed to detect the watermark and obey the permissions set by the content provider.
Also last week, Liquid Audio announced that has received a patent (#6,209,094) covering a technique for embedding watermark data in an audio signal that the company states is robust and cannot be removed without destroying the music.

The record company said that each promo copy distributed to the press etc had a digital watermark on it, so they would be able to trace who had released these mp3s.
I take it that all copies contain a different watermark, and these watermarks are then cross referenced to the person who the CD was given to.
The best way to get a simple watermark from a track is to have two copies of the same track with two different watermarks.

 Digital Image Watermark
A new method for digital image watermarking which operates in the frequency domain is under development.
The method is based on the insertion of a pseudo-random sequence of real number in those image frequencies which are most resistant to common signal distortion.
The number of frequencies to be modified and the magnitude of the modification depend on the particular image: they are optimized in order to ensure a good resistance to tampering coupled with a very low perceptibility level. The watermark insertion and extraction procedures can be summarized as follows:
