Digitizing tablets are high-tech drawing tools which allow computer users, with the use of a pressure-sensitive pen stylus and a thin, lightweight electromagnetic tablet, an affordable, fun and fast way to draw, sketch, paint and create masterpieces on the computer.
The 4" x 5" digitizing tablet, which weighs one pound, is the ideal replacement for the typical mouse and mousepad.
Simply translated, drawing on a 4" by 5" digitizing tablet allows you to draw with precision and ease, despite the scrawny size.

 Digitizing tablet - Patent 4455450
A digitizing tablet is realized by maintaining first and second sheets of insulating material in a spaced apart position by sealing them together and filling the resulting pocket with air or fluid under pressure.
Coordinates for the position of a stylus on the face of one of the sheets are obtained with electrical conductors defined on the inner faces of the two sheets.
It is preferred, for example, to use a gas rather than a liquid in equipment where the digitizing tablet is to be disposed in a vertical position such as against the face of a TV tube or as a control panel for a high fidelity tuner or a radio dial.

You will digitize a layer for the United States which may be useful for the major project: using GIS to find out where the "best" places are in the U.S..
There are two purposes to this assignment: (1) to give you experience digitizing with a tablet, and (2) to create a layer that will be useful for the indexing project.

  Digitizing Summary
Digitizing tablets are commonly used in the CAD/CAM and graphics fields allowing drawings, charts or graphs to be input in pictorial form onto the computer screen.
Digitizing, or digitization, is the process of turning an analog signal into a rough digital representation of that signal.
Digitization is performed by reading an analog signal A, and, at regular time intervals (sampling frequency), representing the value of A at that point by an integer.

Graphics tablet - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The RAND Tablet employed a grid of wires under the surface of the pad that encoded horizontal and vertical coordinates in a small magnetic signal.
The tablet generates a signal, which is then received in the tank circuit in the pen.
Graphics tablets, because of their stylus-based interface and (in some cases) ability to detect pressure, tilt, and other attributes of the stylus and its interaction with the tablet, are widely considered to offer a very natural way to create computer graphics, especially two-dimensional computer graphics.

 UNIT 14: On-Screen Digitizing
This method of geocoding is commonly called "heads-up" digitizing because the attention of the user is focused up on the screen, and not on a digitizing tablet.
On-screen digitizing may also be employed in an editing session where there is enough information on the screen to accurately add new features without a reference image or map.
Using the background image as a reference, the animal confinement locations are digitized by tracing the boundaries of the feed lots and any sludge lagoons that may be on the premises.

 DIGITIZING TABLET digital
TABLET -- Tablet/Digitizing Table Notes Digitizing Tables (tablets) are used to physically point to a position (on a flat map, for instance).
On the oher hand, controlling it on the tablet is uncomfortable, because you must to look at the screen (where only the digitized elements appear) as well as at the the table (where the reference map is).
A digitizing tablet looks like a drafting table but is sensitized so that a map is traced with a cursor on the tablet and the locations are identified, converted to numbers, and sent to the computer.

If no digitizing tablets and no pointing devices are installed in the system, an exception is thrown.

The big disadvantage of some tablets is that they can't work as mice, and in order to use them both, the user must swap them in and out of the system as needed, which can be a real hassle to the user.
When placed upon their special digitizing tablet, however, the sensor automatically switches to digitizing mode, and works as an ordinary digitizer until the sensor is removed from the tablet, at which time it reverts back to being an ordinary mouse again.
The nice thing about this is that the sensor and its tablet are not connected to each other in any way; the tablet is connected to an AC power line, and the sensor detects the powered tablet when it's placed upon it.

This page covers common digitizer, system and application driver configuration problems which can cause the digitizing tablet, the Windows pointer, and digitizer-aware applications to work erratically or not at all.
If the digitizer is installed on a system with a relative device like a mouse, you may have to set positioning to Relative in order to avoid “dueling cursors” which makes using both devices at the same time difficult.

Heads-up digitizing is similar to manual digitizing in the way the lines have to be traced by hand, but it works directly on the computer screen using the scanned raster image as backdrop.
This is a significant improvement over manual heads-up digitizing in terms of digitizing accuracy and speed, especially when fully automatic raster to vector conversion can not be applied in cases such as low image quality and complex layers.

Tablet PCs have been around for quite some time now, but the expectations that people had from them have been mostly shattered thus far.
There are two iterations of Tablet PCs; the first one is what the tablets initially looked like, which is the slate form factor where you just have a touch screen and a stylus to do all your work.
From this gap of need and availability arose the "convertible" tablet, where the device looks like a regular laptop except that the screen is 180 degrees rotatable, and once you rotate it, it settles down neatly over the laptop’s keyboard to work like a regular Tablet.
