Shame - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Shame is a psychological condition and a form of religious, political, judicial, and social control consisting of ideas, emotional states, physiological states and a set of behaviors, induced by the consciousness or awareness of dishonor, disgrace, or condemnation.
Shame differs from embarrassment in that it does not necessarily involve public humiliation: one can feel shame for an act known only to oneself, but in order to be embarrassed, one's actions must be revealed to others.
Toxic shame often induces what is known as complex trauma in children who cannot cope with toxic shaming as it occurs and who dissociate the shame until it is possible to cope with.

 Center for Transformational Psychotherapy: Shame
The basic nature of chronic, or excessive, shame is that the shamed person believes, at some level, that she--or he--should not exist, that she is a worthless, defective and empty human being.
Because shame is an uncomfortable feeling, a person who is not overwhelmed by it can use it to alter his or her behavior.
Because shame exists at the very core of one's being and because the shamed person believes his or her worthlessness is an incontrovertible fact, the shamed person doesn't recognize shame as the reason he or she feels worthless.

Dignity in Old Age: The Poetical Meditations of Peter Viereck
This is the being who has bewildered dignity, who undertakes risky adventures, who asserts his own self-transcendence in the face of being transcended by the world (a "rogue"), who clutches at shreds of glory.
Politically, his commitment to human dignity is articulated through a "humanistic conservatism" that defends constitutional democracy and freedom of expression against statist tendencies and movements that force conformity.
In his poetry, human dignity is wrested, precariously, from the struggle to affirm self-transcending life against both the adversity of the world and the evil of those fellow creatures who cooperate with that adversity and spread and intensify it.

Dignity and Shame is about the promise of human compassion, a wise and weathered presence that consoles while acknowledging that the world is not a perfect place.
Though Dignity and Shame is predominantly upbeat (quicker paces, major chords, choruses that are simply anthemic), it doesn't betray Bachmann's weary worldview; rather, the album's songs offer and seek solace with the understanding that such solace should be smothered upon receipt.

R: I read that Dignity and Shame was loosely inspired by the story of a bullfighter and his lover.
The first song that I wrote for the record was ‘Dignity and Shame.’ And that song fell out, and obviously who knows where the hell they come from.
So that was an obvious thing to me when I was thinking of dignity and shame, well obviously the biggest test of that is bullfighting, in terms of visual things that look cool.

DIGNITY AND SHAME continues Bachmann's progression and expands his palette, fusing elements of alt-country, indie-pop, and Americana roots-rock.

Parts of DIGNITY AND SHAME are Spanish-tinged, from the dusty, flamenco-styled instrumental "Islero" to the driving "Andalucia." (The album's cover art and references to bullfighter Manolete contribute to the theme.) Many of Bachmann's songs are so subtle and unassuming it is easy to overlook their craftsmanship.

The Dark Side appeared to be winning with Bring on the Snakes, an album so bourbon-doused, it might have been better-titled Bring on the Shakes, and a heavy Springsteen jones reared its head on most of 2003’s Red Devil Dawn (not to mention the reverent cover of “The River” on the Reservoir Songs EP).
But on Dignity and Shame, the fourth full-length under the Crooked Fingers banner, Bachmann has trained his sights on matters of the heart, and brought in a broader, brighter sound to match.
Dignity and Shame isn’t completely removed from past efforts, though, and should avoid alienating longtime fans.

What’s unfortunate is that Dignity and Shame’s best moments are those that recall the unreachable heights of those older, better bands.
Rather than the infectious glee of their vocal harmonies though, Bachmann’s voice is that of a weary old man. This prevents the songs from sounding like total ripoffs by giving them a new context and presentation.
Ultimately Dignity and Shame wants to make a big statement, it wants to be very important but those moments when it does manage to crawl from beneath the shadow of other, better bands, it only shows its worst face.
