Process for preparing disubstituted furans   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
1-4 diketones, also known as gamma-diketones, constitute a recognized class of organic compounds, and methods for their preparation are well known to those skilled in the art.
Optimal yields are obtained when the reactant diketone, diluted with an inert gas, such as nitrogen, is passed over the zeolite catalyst or through a bed of the catalyst at a temperature in the range about 100.degree.-500.degree.
The reactant diketone was fed by means of a Sage syringe pump in a stream of nitrogen.

Aryloxyalkyl diketones, useful as anti-viral agents, are prepared from an aryloxyalkyl halide and an alkali metal enolate salt of a diketone or keto-ester, or from a haloalkyl-diketone and an alkali metal salt of a phenol.
This invention relates to aryloxyalkyl diketone and keto-esters, to the preparation thereof and to compositions and methods for the use thereof as anti-viral agents.
3,829,475 discloses diketones and keto-esters of the formula RR'CH--Alk--Ar wherein R is acyl, R' is acyl or carboalkoxy, Alk is an alkylene bridge and Ar is phenyl or substituted phenyl, useful as pesticidal and anti-viral agents; no aryl ethers are disclosed.

Addition of lithium dimethylcuprate to the methyl ether 9 followed by attempts to trap the intermediate enolate with sulphoxide 7 in situ were unsuccessful, but this enolate could be trapped as the trimethylsilyl enol ether (Scheme 4).
A brief study of the feasibility of an enantioselective reduction of diketone 11 was made, as this would represent a simple method for achieving an enantioselective synthesis of our desired target.
It would appear from these preliminary experiments that, at least in principle, enantioselective reduction of a diketone such as 11 is possible in good enantiomeric excess (enantiomeric excesses estimated from proton nmr spectra in the presence of 3 equiv.

C&EN: CRITTER CHEMISTRY - THE CHEMISTRY OF SEXUAL DECEPTION
A simple diketone emitted by the Australian orchid Chiloglottis trapeziformis elicits the amorous attention of the thynnine wasp Neozeleboria cryptoides.
The orchids and wasps contain only nanogram amounts of the compound, and the team was not able to extract enough of it for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy.
The diketone's reactivity further limited the researchers, because it readily polymerizes at room temperature.

The total vicinal diketone (TVDK) profiles of a range of commercial beers has been carried out to provide a market survey.
Simple preparation procedures and an automatic gas chromatographic technique (ECD) was used to analyse 86 beers for diacetyl, 2,3-pentanedione, their respective precursors, 2-acetolactic acid and 2-acetohydroxy butyric acid and their products of reduction, acetoin and 3-hydroxy-2-pentanone.
This technique can be used to assist in the identification of bacteria responsible for process problems.

A diketone linker masks primary amines on a solid support.
The pyrrole structure could be easily cleaved to recover the free amine.
The diketone linker reagent (1) was formed in five steps starting from the commercial resin TentaGel S-NH The efficiency of this method was demonstrated by reacting 1 with Fmoc-protected p-anisidine to form the pyrrole, then regenerating the free amine (2) with NH OH•HCl.

Thus, compound 7 is mostly converted to diketone 8, while the desired compound 2 remains as an enantiopure hydroxyketone.
Purification of the reaction mixture affords the desired hydroxyketone 2 plus diketone 8, which can be reconverted to the racemic mixture of compounds 2 and 7 to go through the kinetic resolution step again.
Scheme 1 Once hydroxyketone 2 has been synthesized, it can then be alkylated and oxidized to the enone (3).

Ascorbic acid - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Attack of ascorbic enol on proton to give 1,3-diketone
Ascorbic acid also rapidly interconverts into two unstable diketone tautomers by proton transfer, although it is the most stable in the enol form.
The proton of the enol is lost, and reacquired by electrons from the double bond, to produce a diketone.

About diketone   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
After the deprotonation of diketone then it becomes diketonate (is this term correct?).
O or C? In this resonance structure, as O is more electronegative, the e- density should be higher in both O atoms in time average than that of C. However, C is less electronegative, it is easier to donate e- to the proton than that of O. So, which factor is dominant?
One more thing, if O abstracts the proton, an enol will be formed, and it becomes diketone again after tautomerization.
