  Britomartis
From some sources it is known, that the Archaic cult wooden statue (xoanon) of Britomartis, made by the great Minoan craftsman Daedalus, existed in the temple of Olous.(2) In the Greek Classical period Britomartis was represented on the coins of the cities Chersonesos and Olous (Elounda), where she became the main divinity.
Also as Diktynna she was portrayed on the Cretan coins of the cities Kydonia, Polyrrhenia and perhaps Phalasarna.
The Minoan goddess of mountains, Britomartis was worshipped in Crete, as Aphaea in Aegina, during the Archaic period as Potnia theron in the Greek Mainland, and during the Classical age as Diktynna in Western Crete and somewhere else too.

 preHomer
Britomartis is said to bear the epithet Diktynna because she caught the eye of King Minos.
The Greek explanation that Britomartis is called Diktynna because she fell into diktna is known as a folk etymology -- a traditional etiology for a word or name whose true source or meaning is no longer known.
It is possible that Diktynna and Britomartis together were a realization of the Twin Goddesses.

One was with Britomartis and Diktynna, in which case she was a lawgiver and founder of civilization.

Minos loved her, but she would have none of him, and avoided him by flight or hiding for nine months.
At last, in running away from him, she leaped over a cliff into the sea, but was caught, unhurt, in the nets (diktya) of fishers, hence her title Diktynna.
Thence Artemis rescued her; according to the most detailed account that we have, Britomartis had simply hidden under the nets, and sailed across to Aigina, as soon as Minos had gone away, in a fishing-smack belonging to one Andromedes.
