Most of the designers of these games seem to have garnered much of their knowledge of the field from having played one of the big three (and that one is usually EverQuest...).
People who have played DikuMUDs and want to run their own often hack the code to make it work how they want it to work.
DikuMUD is open source, EverQuest isn't, so each "child" of EverQuest must be recoded anew.

The most fundamental criticism concerning DikuMUD is the fact that it uses alot of hardcoded features.
This means that adding something like a new object type or a new command requires recompilation of the server, and a reboot of the game.

Avalon, the Legend Lives, started in 1989, was the first MUD to combine a consistent fantasy story-line with a commercial venture.

Though seeing some decline in the past few years due to the advent of graphical MUDs, the MUD scene is still very much alive on the Internet, and can be accessed via standard telnet clients, or specialized MUD clients that give a more pleasant user experience.

The crux is the fact that you can log onto the mud right now and see dozens of text strings that are identical to those from the original DikuMUD.
This is undeniable evidence that this MUD at bare minimum is plagiarizing DikuMUD and is therefore in violation of the DikuMUD license.
While this does not prove that the code is the same, it does go along with all the other evidence out there to really make one wonder.
