The Dilettante by Edith Wharton : Arthur's Classic Novels
IT was on an impulse hardly needing the arguments he found himself advancing in its favor, that Thursdale, on his way to the club, turned as usual into Mrs.
Yet it was to talk over his call with Miss Gaynor that he was now returning to the scene of that episode; and it was because Mrs.
Vervain could be trusted to handle the talking over as skilfully as the interview itself that, at her corner, he had felt the dilettante's irresistible craving to take a last look at a work of art that was passing out of his possession.

Johnson’s attack on Berra displays the smugness of the dilettante which Johnson appears to be even in the area he claims to be his field of expertise – the analysis of the logic of arguments.
Being apparently confident, as is usual for a dilettante, of having mastered the nuances of biological science, Johnson has the gall to accuse scientists of lies, maintaining that scientists deliberately conceal information that may reveal a weakness in their position.

Light, Six-Sided, Paradoxical Fight by Marco Frascari for the Nexus Network Journal vol.4 no.2 (Spring 2002)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
To be truthful to its intention, the exact title of this present tale should be as idiosyncratic and lengthy as the Greek-Latin unfolding of the title marking the extraordinary rebus-opus conceived by Francesco Colonna: Hypnerotomachia Polifili ubi humana omnia non nisi somnium essa docet atque obiter plurima scitu sane quam digne commemorat [1499].
However, the chosen quasi-short title, "A Light, Six-Sided, Paradoxical Fight", is sufficient to take aim at the forces that have shaped a system of critical thoughts on how to fight gravity with a happy architecture based on light structures combined with the dilettante's approaches to hexagonal design.
Within an allegorical garden of hanging paradoxes, the labyrinthine path of this account begins with Italo Calvino's critical evaluation of lightness and a biased version of the myth of Perseus.
