 Cubitt families
The Cubitt families (see important letter from David Cubitt) came from near Dilham where the Broads meet the higher land of North Norfolk and were millwrights and presumably enjoyed the benefits of working on both wind and water driven mills.
John Marshall states that Benjamin Cubitt was born at Dilham, Norfolk in 1795 (Brown states previous year, as does David Cubitt who states that he was Baptised at Southrepps) into a family which became noted for its civil engineers.
William Cubitt was born and Baptised in Dilham, Norfolk, in 1785, and died in Clapham Common, London, on 13 October 1861, aged 76.

 Norfolk Mills - Dilham post wind mill
Dilham postmill stood on Mill Common a few hundred yards away from Dilham watermill and in the mid 1800s was using a single pair of patent sails mounted on a cast iron windshaft to power one pair of French burr stones.
The above painting is allegedly of the mill, however, although the mill was recorded as being open trestle and only having one pair of sails in the early to mid 1800s, a roundhouse and an additional pair of sails could well have been added in later years.
All that capital CORN WINDMILL standing in Dilham aforesaid with Granary, Barn, Stable, Piggeries and other requisites belonging thereto together with a Piece of first class Arable Land containing One Acre or thereabouts on which the said mill now stands.

Dilham is one of my favourite villages on the Broads.
It must be 25 years since I made it to Dilham and the staithe looks a lot better now.
