The Hindu : Magazine / Cinema : Revisiting "DDLJ"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
"Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge" is about being "Hindustani" but not in a jingoistic fashion.
"DDLJ" dates back to post-"Baazigar" days when Shahrukh still had an antihero image; the Kajol-Shahrukh chemistry was still to take its hold on the imagination of Bollywood; and Karan Johar was making his appearance in the film as Shahrukh's friend — and as one of the assistant directors.
Continuing in the saccharin family-drama tradition of "Maine Pyaar Kiya" and "Hum Aapke Hain Kaun", "DDLJ" transports the story itself to an NRI milieu and then brings it back to the mustard fields to declare that `East or West, Punjab is Best'.

DilwaleDulhania Le Jayenge was the first movie of its era that brought in the theme of making movies on Non Resident Indians.
DDLJ has a similar storyline of 'Boy meets Girl' but the family becomes the big reason why they cannot live their personal life.
Kajol Aka Simran is the shy daughter of a European NRI yearning for the homeland, who dreams and waits for a prince charming to enter into her life whereas Shahrukh is the truant college boy who teases and fools every person he meets.

 Desipora: Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge
Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge became a cult film for a generation of Indians living abroad who identified with the two stars.
DDLJ is a movie that epitomizes the relationship between the diaspora and the homeland, one where there is yearning for the homeland yet there is the Indianness of heart whilst living abroad.
A lot of critics have claimed that in most of the Bollywood movies featuring NRI’s, India the country does not exist, but Indiannes is commodifed to suit the NRI’s imagination of India and is also used as his/her justification for living away from the homeland while remaining faithful to its values.

Spontaneity and versatility are two virtues that have set apart Kajol from the rest of her kin.
She could dissolve herself into the character of Simran in ‘Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge’, draped in chiffons, silks and saris, with as much dexterity she could transform in to the tom-boy Anjali in ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’, sporting sneakers, track-pants, caps and a short-crop hair-cut.
