Dimapur District was upgraded from Sub-division to full fledged District in December 1997.
The district consist of Dimapur and Niuland sub-divisions, bifurcated from Kohima.
Most of the ruins appear to be contemporaries with the Kachari civilisation, established before the Abom invasion in the 13th Century A.D. There are evidence of a touch of Hindu influence on most of them, though these are predominantly non-Aryan, with elaborate rituals and the cult of fertility.

Reacting to the reports published in today’s edition of The Telegraph which carried the claims of the DHD that Dimapur belonged to the Dimasas, NSCN-IM leader V Horam informed Newmai News Network that history "reveals everything" and added that "Dimapur has been the land of the Nagas".
V Horam further said that the Dimasas had come and lived in Dimapur at one time and they left by themselves and were not chased away by the Nagas.
The interaction was conducted by "Lt. Gen" (retd) V.S. Atem and A.P. Shimrah and the invocation was pronounced by Rev Shiwoto Assumi.

An approximately 10,000-strong crowd of Phek Town marched to the office of the Deputy Commissioner in protest against the presence of two rival Naga outfits, the NSCN-IM and the NNC, in the district Headquarters, and demanded that the town be cleared of the militants.
One NSCN-IM cadre, identified as ‘Sgt. Maj.’ Ningam Tangkhul, is killed in a factional clash with the NSCN-K at Bungsang in the Dimapur district.
