Dimethylformamide - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dimethylformamide is a polar (hydrophilic) aprotic solvent with a high boiling point.
Dimethylformamide is synthesized from formic acid and dimethylamine.
Dimethylformamide is not stable in the presence of strong bases like sodium hydroxide or strong acids like hydrochloric acid or sulfuric acid and is hydrolyzed back into formic acid and dimethylamine, especially at elevated temperatures.

 Chemical Sampling Information: Dimethylformamide
Another marker for exposure to DMF is N-methylcarbamoylated hemoglobin in blood, which is thought to be due to reaction of the metabolite methylisocyanate with the N-terminal amino acid in globin, valine.
A concentration of 135 nmol of adduct per gram of globin has been estimated to occur after repeated inhalation exposure to 10 ppm dimethylformamide.

Process for production of dimethylformamide - Patent 4251460
(d) introducing the dimethylamine-trimethylamine mixture into a dimethylformamide synthesizing column wherein dimethylamine is reacted with carbon monoxide in the presence of a catalyst and unreacted carbon monoxide and trimethylamine are separated to yield dimethylformamide.
More particularly, it is concerned with a process for producing dimethylformamide which comprises reacting methanol and ammonia to form methylamines, separating a mixture of dimethylamine and trimethylamine from the methylamines, and reacting the mixture of dimethyamine and trimethylamine with carbon monoxide to produce dimethylformamide.
Dimethylformamide (hereinafter abbreviated "DMF") is widely used in many industrial applications, for example, as a solvent for artificial leather, urethane fibers, acryl fibers and various resins, and moreover, as a reaction solvent or reagent for a wide variety of organic syntheses.

 N,NDimethylformamide [factsheet]
In rabbits exposed to dimethylformamide by gavage (experimentally placing the chemical in the stomach), decreased mean fetal weight and increased percentage of malformed live fetuses per litter and increased percentage of litters with malformed fetuses were observed in the high-dose group.
* Dimethylformamide occurs as a colorless to slightly yellow hygroscopic liquid that is miscible with water.
Dimethylformamide solutions are used to process polymer fibers, films, and surface coatings; to permit easy spinning of acrylic fibers; to produce wire enamels, and as a crystallization medium in the pharmaceutical industry.

Documentation for Immediately Dangerous to Life or Health Concentrations (IDLHs) - 68122
Basis for original (SCP) IDLH: The chosen IDLH is based on the statements by Clayton et al.
[1963] that rats survived a 4hour exposure to air saturated with dimethylformamide vapor [Smyth and Carpenter 1948] and inhalation of saturated vapors for 6 hours was lethal [Haskell Laboratory].
Basis for revised IDLH: The revised IDLH for dimethylformamide is 500 ppm based on acute inhalation toxicity data in animals [Stasenkov 1961].

Dimethylformamide was used as a solvent for fabric coating in poorly ventilated areas without appropriate skin protection.
Dimethylformamide exposure to air concn of 3500 ppm is considered immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH).
The percutaneous uptake of dimethylformamide increased with increasing ambient temperature and humidity and contributed some 13-36% of the urinary N-hydroxymethyl-N-methylformamide excreted during combined inhalation and percutaneous exposure to the same concentration of dimethylformamide vapor.

 Dimethylformamide (HSG 43, 1990)
In the USA, exemption from residue tolerance requirements is made for dimethylformamide in food and animal feed, in certain cases.
In the USA, dimethylformamide may be used as a component of adhesives in articles intended for use in the packaging, transportation, or holding of food.
In the EEC, the labelling of solvent preparations containing dimethylformamide is governed by legislation that classifies DMF in Class II/b.

Bioconversion of dimethylformamide (DMF) was studied using two sets of three-stages-in-series biofilters, one packed with inoculated pig manure and the other with coconut fiber compost-based media.
The pig manure compost media with a lower initial C/N ratio favored the nitrification reaction; its maximum capacity was 8.58 g NO 3 - -N/m 3.h.
Dimethylformamide (DMF) is widely used in the manufac-ture of polyurethane leather and synthetic fibers.

19880217 Dimethylformamide and Testicular Cancer.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Incidence of germ cell tumors has been reported among aircraft repairmen in the Journal of Urology as well as leather tanners in the Lancet.
Evaluation of an occupationally identical shop at a second F4 rework facility at which there had been no previous reports of excess neoplasms revealed 4 additional men with a history of testicular germ cell tumors (p less than 0.01, Poison, compared to the expected number of cases based on national incidence rates).
Our investigation raises but does not prove a hypothesis of association between subsequent development of testicular germ cell cancer and history of extensive exposure to a mixture containing dimethylformamide, which had been used in F4 repair work at these facilities in the 1960s and 1970s.

It seems very likely that Visser's "Virodene P058" is this one and the same dimethylformamide, the cure for all of the great problems in medicine AND cryonics.
Yes, dimethylformamide is a mutagen, with a great deal of toxicity for multiple organs.
I will admit that the more pure the stuff, the less fishy and more ether-like the odor, so the fish odor may be an impurity from some other amine (in somewhat analogous fashion to the rotten oyster odor of DMSO).
