To the west of Bohol is Cebu, to the northeast is the island of Leyte and to the south, across the Bohol Sea is Mindanao.
Bohol, derived from the word Bo-ho or Bo-ol, is the seat of the first international treaty of peace and unity between Datu Sikatuna, a native chieftain and Miguel Lopez de Legaspi, a Spanish conquistador on March 16, 1565 through a blood compact known today as Sandugo.
This infuriated the population of Bohol and reignited the insurrection.

April 1899 — Upon the departure of the Spaniards in Bohol, a "Gobierno de Canton" was formed by prominent Boholanos to run the province according to the Republic proclaimed by Amilio Aguinaldo.
During this dark period, hundreds of Boholanos died and 20 of the 35 towns of Bohol, at the time, were burned to the ground and livestock were slaughtered indiscriminately in the effort to force the Boholanos to submission.

Jose (2001, 34) describes the church as the “epitome of Bohol Gothic.” All of the structure is basically a lintel and post type, gothic features like lancet arches, rose window, spires and crockets are merely decorative.
A typical Bohol feature, but definitely not gothic, is the portico built in front of the façade, an extension of the choir loft.
Originally named Can-ogong, Clarin was established as a parish in honor of St. Michael the Archangel in 1924, after being a visita of Inabanga in 1852, and of Tubigon in 1881.

After brief formalities, a Spaniard asked, “Como se llama este lugar?.” A native, thinking that the former was asking who the masters of the place were, answered “Ka Ida Mayaw.” Before departure, the Spaniards echoed the name and the natives nodded in agreement.
Another tale, was that when a group if Spaniards arrived they found Dimiao desolate unlike the others, which were already thriving.
