Topic: Diminuendo

  Sonic Glossary: Diminuendo
In addition to diminuendo and decrescendo, there are several more specific terms for effects of the same type: morendo (literally "dying"), smorzando ("extinguishing"), and a niente ("fading away to nothing").
The terms diminuendo and decrescendo indicate a steady and gradual decrease in volume.
Diminuendos are often used to suggest subsiding, relaxing, or becoming mysterious.

For crescendos, continuations are indicated using the open parenthesis; for diminuendos, continuations are indicated using the closed parenthesis.
In short, a crescendo (or diminuendo) marking is always assumed to increase (or decrease) the dynamic level from the preceding indication.

 Diminuendo Chess
Diminuendo Chess is a 43 cell hexagonal chess featuring a central doublearea 'transmutation' cell where each captured token is dropped and transmuted (usually having its powers thereby diminished) to the next token type in an agreed ranking sequence.
In Diminuendo 'drop check' is not a valid check and is ignored, but only for that turn in which it occurred.
Diminuendo manages to orchestrate the gradual reduction in the power of the armies as the game progresses, so the board remains fairly populous well into the game and inordinate or one-sided slaughter is wellnigh impossible.

Corelli's diminuendo's were excellent and still kept the vibrancy, and I have never heard it being squeezed.
It might be slightly harsh, but as has been pointed out before, he rarely sang mezza voce stuff and tended to rely on his diminuendos to get the volume down (there are of course several occasions to the contrary but in general it is not something he did often).

 [No title]
A number of TablEditors have attempted to place crescendos or diminuendos with the best of intentions but have, either through carelessness or a misunderstanding of the correct procedure, failed to achieve the desired result.
For example, the first note of a crescendo is played at the initial level and the following notes are gradually increased in volume until the end of the transition, at which point the last note is very slightly softer than the level of the first note following the crescendo symbol.
From a audio point of view, there's little or no point in making use of crescendo/diminuendo markings a single beat in length if the amount of the change is of two dynamic levels or less.

 TrouserPress.com :: Lowlife
Despite Lowlife's concentration on ambience, the affecting "Wild Swan" is a lovely song, punctuated by repeated guitar triplets fluttering overhead.
The aptly titled and excellent Diminuendo reduces Lowlife's volume by stripping the arrangements of their thickening ingredients, leaving only the bass, simple drums and frugal bits of guitar and keyboards to support Lorentson's increasingly ambitious and musical vocals.
Named for a phrase scratched into one of Diminuendo's run-off grooves, From a Scream to a Whisper is a 1985-'88 compilation containing most of the 1987 EP plus several tracks from each of the three prior records.

The tapering of the sound level at the end of a phrase is not the same as a diminuendo, for example.
A diminuendo is usually performed over a longer time span, often as many as one or two measures.
The tapering of sound at the end of a phrase (also called an inflection) is performed over the last one or two beats of the phrase, and may be performed in any dynamic level.

Crescendo/Diminuendo Asymmetries in Beethoven's Piano Sonatas   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-19)
A study of 32 piano sonatas by Beethoven reveals a significant asymmetry between increasing and decreasing dynamics.
Specifically: (1) crescendos are more frequent than diminuendos, (2) crescendos tend to last longer than diminuendos, (3) large changes of dynamics tend to involve reductions in loudness, and (4) crescendos will more commonly follow low dynamic levels than will diminuendos follow high dynamic levels.
These results support a "ramp archetype" of musical dynamics in which the music tends to build in a gradual way, but tends to subside relatively quickly.

 Chicago Symphony Orchestra - Dynamics
In the music of Haydn and Mozart, for instance, f's and p's are common, but ff, pp, and crescendo appear infrequently, diminuendo even more infrequently, and mf and mp never.
Haydn and Mozart and their contemporaries assumed that, for the most part, well-educated performers would know when a musical phrase required a crescendo or diminuendo, and that good musicians would use good taste in managing the subtle dynamic shadings and gradations necessary during the course of a piece.
It was Ludwig van Beethoven (1770–1827) who started the practice of providing much more detailed indications of dynamics, and most composers since Beethoven's time have followed his example.
