		The film's structure and deceptively simple technical style belie the suffering and trials that go along with being a man or woman in the capitalist world, as well as realizing an unarticulated but desperately obvious need for a comprehensive male and female release from a constricting status quo.
		DINER presents men in their early twenties who apparently have been so discouraged from truly interacting with other human beings, women, that Shrevie finds his only true marriage with his buddies at the diner.
		DINER is a funny, warm, often poignant, ultimately human film in its implied plea for human freedom from the "blessings of civilization." Through its numerous parallels and apparent dichotomies, its particularly interesting use of the media as metaphor reveals a film that goes beyond the "personal memoir" genre to which it has been allocated.

	DINER
		It's one of those films that just makes you smile and yearn for the days when friendship was the only thing that mattered.
		I think this film is Levinson's best, maybe because it's the one closest to his own life.
		His antics give the film some of its' greatest laughs, though it's obvious his character is in more mental pain than he'd ever admit.

		The main attraction is a new documentary, Diner: on the Flip Side, which is most of the major stars (Mickey Rourke is conspicuously absent) and Barry Levinson reminiscing about their experiences during the production.

	DVD Review: Here On Earth
		After stopping at a small-town diner, the film leads to a race that ends up destroying the diner, which belongs to Samantha(Sobieski)'s mother.
		The film has some wonderful country scenery, but is filmed in such a soft nature that it takes away from the the enjoyment of the picture.
		The film relies on music to an almost silly amount, and when the music arrives in the scene, it's loud and takes too much of a focus.

	Film Production Notes
		When casting the film, Levinson was primarily concerned with being true to his conception of the characters, rather than with securing box-office names.
		As personal as the film's subject matter is to Levinson, the actors found a universality in it that spoke to each of them in a deeply moving way.
		Filming "Avalon" was quite literally a family experience for the filmmaker and some of the cast.

		Writer/director Barry Levinson's debut film Diner (1982) was a bitter-sweet, rites-of-passage tale of five male buddies in their twenties growing up in late 50s Baltimore and hanging out in the local diner.

		By the end of the film, we feel we are part of the gang, and we almost wish the film wouldn't end and we will have an opportunity to meet them next week at the Diner.
		In Diner, one of the characters eventually decide to become a tin man, and Michael Tucker stars as the same character (Bagel) in both films.
		As you would expect, this is a very dialogue focused film and the dynamic range as well as frequency spread of the soundtrack is not that wide.

	Club Ed
		Travelers on 150th Street East, in the open desert east of Lancaster, might imagine they are approaching such a place, despite the unlikely location (Route 66 never came near here - 150th Street is part of a grid carved out of the desert as part of development plans for subdividing the Antelope Valley).
		In fact, what they are approaching is one of several motel/gas station/diner film sets in the area, a place called "Club Ed" which was built from scratch for a Dennis Hopper film (Eye of the Storm) in 1990.
		Instead of striking the set after filming was completed, the set was bought and has been used as a desert location and production services center ever since.

	Blood Diner (1987)
		This is the sort of film that Troma kept seeming to want to make but perpetually lack the ability to do.
		The gore is hilariously absurd - when a guard is whacked over the head his eyeballs go flying out, a scene where the whole diner is sprayed in vomit, the diner owner trying to drive with his hands severed at the wrist.
		The film was originally intended as a sequel to Herschell Gordon Lewis's Blood Feast (1963).
