The Dingiso, Dendrolagus mbaiso also known as Bondegezou is a species of tree-kangaroo native and endemic to Western New Guinea of Indonesia.
The Dingiso is most common in the western part of Irian Jaya because it is protected by members of the Moni tribe, for whom it is an ancestor.

The most recently described species, Dingiso Dendrolagus mbaiso, was brought to scientific attention by Dr Flannery in 1995.
Dr Flannery had learned of the existence of this fl and white tree kangaroo from the high altitude mossy forests of the Sudirman Range in West Papua several years earlier.
The type specimens (types are the original specimens on which the first description of a particular species or subspecies is based) of Dingiso and of three other recently described tree kangaroos are lodged in the Australian Museum's mammal collection.

Bulmer's Fruit-bat, a bat though extinct for 12,000 years, the largest cave dwelling bat in the world, Flannery was elated to have found them alive in extremely rugged western Papua New Guinea.
The one though that Flannery is the most proud of discovering was the Dingiso, a new species of tree-kangaroo he found in the alpine areas of Irian Jaya, a beautiful fl and white animal, surprising tame, threatened but fortunately partially protected by native taboos against harming them.
However, as remarkable as all of that is, one could argue that the real stars of this book are the people of New Guinea, particularly the indigenous Melanesian peoples that Flannery spends a great deal of time with and clearly loves.

What has been your most exciting or personally satisfying discovery?
FLANNERY: I think the discovery of that fl and white tree kangaroo, the Dingiso (Dendrolagus mbaiso), was the most amazing thing for me. An animal the size of a Labrador dog, as strikingly colored as that - that it could have remained undiscovered until 1995 seemed incredible.
That was quite something to think, "I'm the first European to see this thing." Having the pleasure of describing it and figuring out a bit about its ecology and studying it was wonderful.
