  15. Dinner-Giving with Limited Equipment. Post, Emily. 1922. Etiquette
For the one or two formal dinners which the average city dweller feels obliged to give every season, nothing is easier than to hire professionals; it is also economical, since nothing is wasted in experiment.
Roast beef is never served at a dinner party—it is a family dish and generally has Yorkshire pudding or roast potatoes on the platter with the roast itself, and is followed by pickles or spiced fruit.
At her few enormous and formal dinners in town, her cook was allowed to be magnificently architectural, but if you dined with her alone, the chances were ten to one that the Sunday chicken and pancakes would appear before you.

'Dinner With Friends' Is Real Food for Thought (washingtonpost.com)
Director Brooke L. Howell and her cast of four have a lot on their plates in "Dinner with Friends," Donald Margulies's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama.
What seems on the surface to be a study of one couple's dissolution and the effect it has on their closest friends yields more than that under Howell's gently probing guidance.
The nuances of everyday reality are brought out in stark contrast to the idealized versions living in their heads and, perhaps, in many of the audience members' heads.

The jealousy over who will maintain the dominant relationship with their gourmand dinner buddies, the uninhibited rage that can lead to great sex, and the fact that couples who are separated and even divorced do still sleep together.
However, for those of us who have had friends who have gone through a similar experience, or for married couples who want to put the magnifying glass up their own relationships, it can be a bit of an eye opener.

 Dinner With Friends Movie Review
Dinner With Friends proves that all you really need to make an entertaining film is a good script a good director and a handful of good actors.
Years ago they introduced Collette to Quaid’s close friend Kinnear an attorney - the two soon married and as a foursome they spent much of the salad days of their thirties as the closest of friends.
As the film begins the four are supposed to meet for dinner, as Quaid and McDowell have just returned home from Italy and are eager to share a few new culinary skills with their friends.

The playwright calls Dinner With Friends his most autobiographical work to date, although he hastens to add that the marital troubles portrayed in the play are not those of himself and his wife, but of close friends.

KDHX Theatre Review - Dinner with Friends   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
Dinner with Friends, David Margulies Pulitzer Prize-winning play, explores the unexpected changes between (and within) two, aged 40-something, couples, best friends, who’ve been having dinner together for over a dozen years and who’ve known each other even longer.
When Tom learns that Beth not only enjoyed a fabulous dinner but also told their friends about their divorce, his hunger for friendship (and dinner) compels him to pay Gabe and Karen a late-night visit to plead his case, and, of course, eat.
Gabe’s and Karen’s empathy and allegiance to their friends split by gender, no doubt also influenced by the fact that Tom was originally Gabe’s college pal and Beth, Karen’s co-worker.

Dinner with Friends is by no means perfect - it goes on a touch too long and yes, it's quite talky - but in this era where dumb comedies and mindless action flicks rule, it does provide a refreshing change of pace.

Dinner with Friends began as a commissioned work for the Actors Theater of Louisville and had its world premiere at the 1998 Humana Festival of New American Plays.
Whether members of the audience can relate to the forty-something couples who come of age in the radical seventies, become parents under the Reagan administration, and then either solidify or lose touch with their long-term relationships, the play exposes the same, universal insecurities that people face every time there are shattering changes in their lives.
