Dinner at Eight is a terrific rental for those curious about an earlier, grander era of Hollywood.
Even before watching Dinner at Eight, I was ready with adjectives like "sparkling," "charming," and "classic." However, the film is a good watch, but not a great watch.

DINNER AT EIGHT is one of those rare films that blur the distinction between comedy and drama.
The comedy drama blending of DINNER AT EIGHT is the natural result of an attempt to fuse the seemingly disparate elements of light drawing room comedy with the collapse of a morality symbolized by the hucksterism of Dan Packard and sleazy social climbing of his wife Kitty.
I find "Dinner at Eight", to be by far the best of the multi plot all star stories produced during the 1930's and it constantly amazes me at the sheer star power the major studios and MGM in particular had at their disposal in the golden era.

The Jujube Spotlight - Dinner at Eight
Adapted from a stage play by George S. Kaufman and Edna Ferber, "Dinner at Eight" presents intersecting stories set during America's Great Depression that illustrate the rough passage from the old aristocracy, based on European customs and ancestral wealth, to the new aristocracy, hewn out of the free-for-all of 20th-century capitalism.
With varying degrees of (and reasons for) excitement, all of the characters in "Dinner at Eight" are preparing for a fancy party at the home of Oliver and Millicent Jordan (Lionel Barrymore and Billie Burke).
The most memorable story in "Dinner at Eight" takes the themes of a changing culture and life's true value and adds a somber look at what happens when a person fails to recognize and respond to them.

 Dinner At Eight (1933)
A masterfully-directed, poignant melodramatic comedy by director George Cukor and producer David O. Selznick, Dinner at Eight (1933) was filled with a tremendous cast of stars (inspired by the previous year's Grand Hotel (1932)) - who are all invited to a Manhattan formal dinner party during the height of the Depression.
The dinner party (of the film's title) is being hosted by scheming, social-climbing Millicent Jordan (Billie Burke), wife of ailing and soon-to-be-bankrupt shipping magnate Oliver Jordan (Lionel Barrymore).
The film looks at the tangled and changed lives of the high society guests, from the time the invitations are given out for "dinner at eight" at the Jordans to the time of the party itself.

 DINNER AT EIGHT - DVD
Dinner at Eight is basically an emotional hedonist that careens from cheap witticism to low tragedy as its whims dictate--it's not a narrative, it's a clearinghouse of devices and situations calculated to give the audience a high good time.
Still, there's gravity anchoring that fun: I can't remember another frivolous movie where so many of the sympathetic characters teeter on the brink of financial ruin, or where one character is driven to suicide; apparently, the audience that made this a hit had a steely reserve unthinkable today.
It's "Survivor: Dinner at Eight", and if it's quick to dispel its clouds at the very end, at least it exploits their menace for every grab in the book.
