  OFF THE TELLY: Reviews/2003/dinnerladies
Bucking the notion that you need a team of scriptwriters to produce a show with plenty of laughs, this is a programme that, surely, merits the prefix "classic".
Eschewing the notion of catering for a particular demographic group or wanting to belong to a specific comedic genre, dinnerladies clings steadfast to the old-fashioned ideal of simply being a warm, humorous show that people, regardless of age, creed or social status, can watch and enjoy.
dinnerladies also is free from the criticism of comparison.

Dinnerladies - Review - I read it in the Daily Mail...
There is much debate these days about the decline of British sitcoms, and on the whole I think that this criticism is justified, even though you have to remember that we look at the past through rose tinted glasses and ignore the hundreds of comedies that flopped.
Dinnerladies is perfectly self-contained in the same way as Fawlty Towers - just 16 episodes (between 1998 and 2000) - it tells its story, makes us cry both with laughter and sadness and then stops leaving us wanting more like any great comedy should.
Her writing is witty and sharp and watching Dinnerladies it is as if you are witnessing an extended Victoria Wood sketch, albeit spoken by different characters.

As with much of Victoria Wood's work, there is also a counterpoint of sadder themes, including deaths in the families of two of the main characters, a painful divorce, one of the characters living with cancer, and a long-running on-off relationship involving a great deal of heartache for the pair involved.
Royals - The dinnerladies are very excited about an impending Royal visit, though they aren't impressed to find out that they've been allocated His Royal Highness Prince James, The Duke of Danby, as they've never heard of him, with the exception of Stan who met him 30 odd years before at Catterick Garrison army base.
Fog (November 1, 1999) - The dinnerladies are dismayed to hear that the November fog has allowed a convicted murderer to escape from Strangeways prison just a few miles away.

Dinnerladies is possibly the most underestimated comedy the world has ever seen.
It's difficult to know why Dinnerladies and Wood herself aren't more widely acknowledged, this is possibly the best sitcom since Dad's Army, and it's certainly as pleasurable to watch.

 British Sitcom Guide - Dinnerladies
Set in the canteen of the fictional northern factory HWD Components, "Dinnerladies" observes the day-to-day work lives of the kitchen staff.
Despite a very slow pace and characters that would normally be considered too down-to-earth and "normal" to appear in a sitcom (except of course for the excellent Walters as Petula) thanks to Victoria Wood's great direction this sitcom really works.
With a almost soap-like storyline and excellent joke telling by the ensemble team "dinnerladies" quickly created a legion of fans when it first aired, all of whom were disappointed that Wood decided to call it a day after just two brief series.
