 Aboyne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is the only gliding airfield in Scotland to boast tarmac runway, of which it has two in parallel which run east-west.
There is also a lot of climbing nearby at the pass of Ballater, and indeed the village of Dinnet a few miles west is the first inside the famous Cairngorms National Park.
Walkers and cyclists can ascend Mount Keen by cycling as far as they can from Glen Tanar forest, before walking to the summit of Mount Keen.

Muir of Dinnet was first made an NNR in 1977 but that agreement expired in 2002 and now SNH and Dinnet & Kinord estates have entered a new agreement.
This protection is important as Muir of Dinnet is one of the largest wintering roosts of Icelandic grey geese in Britain and has a type of dry heathland found in very few other places in Europe.
Dinnet & Kinord estate owner, Edward Humphrey said: “I am very pleased to see the NNR at Muir of Dinnet re-established, not least because it restores a close and constructive relationship between SNH and my family which stretches back to 1977.

The main theme of COP7 is "People and Wetlands: The Vital Link" and gives priority attention to the opportunities and challenges of involving communities and societies at large in the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands throughout the world, including developed and developing countries, and countries whose economy is undergoing transition.
The site lies entirely within the Muir of Dinnet SSSI, National Nature Reserve and is adjacent to the Muir of Dinnet candidate Special Area of Conservation (SAC) which was proposed to the European Commission in March 1998.

 Cycling Routes, Maps around Deeside in Scotland
Cross the Dee, and straight across the A93 at Dinnet (Victoria Tea-rooms) and cycle north on B9119.
The route is suitable for touring bikes as far as Cambus O'May. Mountain bikes are recommended for the next section to Dinnet as the track becomes much rougher.
Return to Ballater either back along the same route, or turn right (S) at the crossroads in Dinnet crossing the river Dee, and turn right again (SW) to return along the South Deeside Road (B976) to Ballater.

The site contains freshwater wetlands, including eutrophic and mesotrophic machair loch; important freshwater marshes and fens; wet and dry machair and saltmarsh, important for their breeding and wintering waterfowl – it supports a rich and diverse range of plant communities and includes some nationally scarce plants and mosses.

Their Royal Highnesses visited the Muir of Dinnet to mark the beginning of an agreement between Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) and staff from the Dinnet and Kinord Estate to secure the future of the reserve until 2030.
Their Royal Highnesses were shown glacial landscapes, including the Burn O’ Vat - huge rocks moulded by glacial meltwater in the Ice Age which have worn to form a cave-like structure.
