Blu-ray Review: Dinosaur | High-Def Digest   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
'Dinosaur' continues to surprise in the audio department, with an uncompressed, 48kHz/24-bit PCM 5.1 surround track that also failed to wow me. It's a perfectly fine mix to be sure, but given that this is a launch title for a next-gen format, I wanted more out of this one.
Surround use is also restrained -- time and again in the film, during a sequence that should sound awe-inspiring and all-enveloping (such as the dinosaur attacks, or the nighttime rainstorm of comets), the rear channels hardly emit any activity.
Though 'Dinosaur' came loaded with extras when it was issued as a two-disc Limited Edition DVD, Blu-ray disc storage limitations mean that most of those goodies have been nixed for the film's inaugural high-def release.

The story begins in the age of the dinosaurs, and events in the film imply that it is close to the twilight of the Cretaceous period.
The film's opening sequence is breathtaking, to say the least, as the Disney animators are able to seamlessly place their exquisitely-designed computer-generated dinosaurs into lush tropical settings.
The film even tries to show the savage 'eat or be eaten' reality of life during the age of dinosaurs, with some actual death scenes that earn the film its PG-rating.

Dinosaur: (James Newton Howard) In many ways, Dinosaur charts a new direction for Disney, both in terms of animated films and music soundtrack albums.
Probably beginning to notice the fact that more non-musical animated films are currently attracting more attention than even the Disney films of the past, this probably explains why Dinosaur is a non-musical.
Disney's soundtrack albums haven't really featured a whole lot of the scores from its animated films (even though there were some exceptions), and it feels like a breath of fresh air that Disney is finally releasing a score-only album to its recent animated film.

The screenplay credited to John Harrison and Robert Nelson Jacobs leaves more than a little to be desired, but 'Dinosaur' is a genuine feast for the eyes, from the first moments inside an iguanodon egg, to the last scenes of a lush green valley with hundreds of dinosaurs bellowing in joy.
But it's all about dinosaurs, which makes it exotic and fascinating; it's the first CGI movie to be essentially realistic, and it's Disney's own first major step on this promising new road.
