Previously to that the diocese formed part of the Western District, one of the four vicariates established by Innocent XI in 1688, and including Wales and the six south-western counties of England.
As the vicars Apostolic resided chiefly at Bath in Somerset, when the district was divided into the two dioceses of Clifton and Plymouth, it was fitting that the last Vicar Apostolic of the Western District, Dr. Joseph William Hendren, O.S.F. (1791-1866), consecrated in 1848, should become the first Bishop of Clifton.

William Vaughan (1814-1902), Canon of the Clifton Diocese, was nominated second Bishop of Plymouth, and on 16 September, 1855, consecrated by Cardinal Wiseman in Clifton pro-cathedral.
Between 10-12 March, 1888, the diocese, by a triduum of prayer, celebrated the bishop's Golden Jubilee of fifty years' priesthood.
Between 19 and 21 December, 1907, the diocese celebrated with a triduum the fiftieth anniversary of his priesthood: on this occasion he added a fresh member to the cathedral chapter.

The Bishop of Clifton heads the Catholic Diocese of Clifton in the Province of Birmingham, in England.
Prior to 1850 the diocese's territory formed part of the Vicariate Apostolic of the Western District, one of the four vicariates established in 1688, which had included all Wales and the six south-western counties of England.
The diocese at present covers an area of 10,912 km² of the Counties of Gloucestershire, Somerset and Wiltshire together with the Bristol area.

 Divine Mercy Sunday devotions growing around the diocese
CLIFTON - Throughout the diocese, devotions celebrating the feast of Divine Mercy will be held the second Sunday of Easter on April 23.
Many parishes in all three counties will be holding Holy Hours and other devotions consisting of confessions, exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Benediction, recitation of the Divine Mercy chaplet and rosary and blessing of the Divine Mercy image.

CLIFTON - The 2005 Bishop's Annual Appeal for the Diocese of Paterson will kick off this weekend at Masses in every parish in the diocese across Passaic, Morris and Sussex counties.
"The Lord's vineyard in the Paterson Diocese is flourishing," said Bishop Serratelli in the appeal's brochure, to be distributed at Masses Sept. 17-18.
Tim Potter, diocesan development director, said that the diocese has distributed a 15-minute video to all the parishes, which can be shown at parish meetings and gatherings.

In 1962, despite the Second Vatican Council having begun its work of reformation within the Roman Catholic Church, it was not possible for the then Church Leaders to pray the Lord's Prayer together, and seldom were the voices of lay men and women heard in the councils of the Church.

As Bishop of the Diocese of Clifton, my concern is for the pastoral welfare of the people in the parishes of the diocese as a whole.
Though some people who have followed the NC way have found great help in the meetings and way of prayer I have decided that the activities of the Neo-Catechumenal Way within the Diocese of Clifton must be brought to a conclusion, and have issued an Administrative Decree to this effect.
With this in mind I have therefore decided to implement a number of clergy moves within the Diocese and Canon Michael English and Fr Tony Trafford will, in a spirit of co-operation with me, be asked, together with other priests of the Diocese, to move to new pastoral situations within the Diocese.

The Diocese of Clifton had agreed with Bristol City Council to the closure of St Thomas More School and the sale of its site in Stottbury Road to the City to accommodate an enlarged Fairfield High School from September 2005.
In a statement the Diocese said that in view of all the circumstances it has agreed, with regret, to work with council officers for a planned closure of the school.
The Diocese will also be working to make suitable alternative arrangements for the pupils of the school in Church and other local educatiobn authority schools.

The Diocesan Council of Priests is a group of priests, some appointed by the Bishop and others elected by the priests of the Diocese, who assist the Bishop in the governance of the diocese so that pastoral welfare may be effectively promoted.

The High Mass in the wonderful setting of the Abbey Church of St Gregory the Great, and with a top quality choir is one of the most important Masses of the year in the diocese.
I am sorry to have to tell you that, although a priest in the diocese kindly volunteered to offer a regular Sunday Mass for us on the first Sunday of each month, I have been unable to obtain the Bishop’s permission for it.
