The Diocese of Norwich was established when Bishop Herbert de Losinga transferred the see from Thetford to Norwich in 1095 or 1096.
At that time the diocese contained Norfolk, Suffolk and part of south-east Cambridgeshire and this remained the case until 1837 when the Cambridgeshire portion along with the Archdeaconry of Sudbury and the Liberty of Bury St Edmunds passed to the Diocese of Ely.
The records of the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich are held by the Suffolk Record Office, those of the Diocese of Ely by the Cambridgeshire County Record Office.

The Diocese of Norwich has fought its way successfully out of two lawsuits alleging the sexual abuse of minors by its clergy and is working to be released from two other similar pending suits.
When the diocese sought a judge's ruling to dismiss the case, files of documents that had been growing since 2000 were unsealed for the first time.
The diocese was exonerated on all charges, but only after more than three years and nearly 100 different motions, objections and affidavits, according to copies of the documents obtained by the Norwich Bulletin.

 Catholic World News : Diocese Screens All Its Workers
The diocese paid Norwich police 11.75 pounds per person to screen 85 clergy and some 275 choir leaders, Sunday school teachers, adult altar servers, organists, and youth leaders through its central criminal computer.
Philip Shryane, Vicar General of East Anglia diocese, who initiated the criminal record check, told the Daily Telegraph that the screening was an attempt to prevent child abuse cases although it was not "100 percent foolproof." The check, for example, did not show if someone had been investigated by police but not charged.
The diocese has acted following almost 30 cases of child abuse by clergy which have come to light throughout England and Wales in the last year.
