Ripon is said to have been made a royal borough by Alfred the Great, and in 937, Athelstan is stated to have granted to the monastery sanctuary, freedom from toll and taxes, and the privilege of holding a court, although both charters attributed to him are known to be spurious.
From before the Conquest until the incorporation charter of 1604 Ripon was governed by a wakeman and 12 elders, or aldermen, but in 1604 the title of wakeman was changed to mayor, and 12 aldermen and 24 common councilmen were appointed.
Ripon was the first school catchment area in England in which parents voted to keep a in 2000.

About 950 the monastery and town were destroyed by King Edred during his expedition against the Danes, but the monastery was rebuilt by the archbishops of York, and about the time of the Conquest was changed to a collegiate church.
The custom of blowing the wakeman's horn every night at nine o'clock is said to have originated about AD It was probably at first a means of calling the people together in case of a sudden invasion, but was afterwards a signal for setting the watch.
Ripon was summoned to send two members to parliament in 1295, and occasionally from that time until 1328-29.

Ripon, may have been a place of importance before the building of the first monastery which predates the present cathedral and was perhaps a central meeting place for the Hrype tribe, from which it takes its name.
An Anglo-Saxon monastery was founded at Ripon in 657 AD by Alfrith, leader of the Northumbrian province of Deira (See Chronicles) and the son of the Northumbrian king Oswy.
Ripon's minster church, built by St Wilfrid was granted the privilege of sanctuary by King Athelstan in 934 AD and its status would have continued to grow if it were not for its destruction, probably by Vikings in 950 AD.

Canon James Bell, who's previous role was as the Diocese of Ripon's Director of Ministry and Training, begins work this week in the newly created post of 'Director of Mission', becoming the most senior full-time officer of the Diocese.
The two Boards of the Diocese of Ripon and Leeds unaffected by the restructuring will be the Board of Education, which oversees ninety seven church schools in Leeds and North Yorkshire, and the Diocesan Board of Finance.
