On the appointment of Bishop Coffin in 1882 the diocese was divided, and the Counties of Berkshire and Hampshire, together with the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands, were separated from the diocese and erected in the new Diocese of Portsmouth.

THE DIOCESE of Southwark "does not do schism", and the three men involved in unauthorised ordinations in south London on 2 November have no legal claim to exercise ordained ministry in the Church of England in the diocese, said the Bishop of Southwark, Dr Tom Butler, on Tuesday.
A number of Evangelical clergy in the diocese of Southwark who did not wish to be identified, on Tuesday described Mr Coekin's church-planting methods as variously "undisciplined", "non-collaborative", "gung-ho", "provocative", "underhand", and "two fingers up".
Dr Butler said in a letter to Southwark clergy on Tuesday: "Parish clergy, Archdeacons, and Bishops alike have been involved in an ongoing exchange with Richard concerning the necessity for church- plants to occur only with the agreement of the vicar of the parish in which the plant is set.
