  Storkyrkan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It is situated in Stockholm's "Old Town" (Gamla Stan) next to the Royal Palace.
Storkyrkan was first mentioned in a written source dated 1279, and became a Lutheran Protestant church in 1527.
The parish church since the Middle Ages of the Nikolai parish, covering the whole island on which the Old Town stands, it has also been the cathedral of Stockholm since the Diocese of Stockholm was broken out from the Archdiocese of Uppsala and the Diocese of Strängnäs in 1942.

The Catholic diocese included the lands of Vestmanland and Stora, Kopparberg (Dalecarlia, Dalarne), and the district of Fellingsbro in the land of Orebro.
Before 1118 the Diocese of Sigtuna was divided into those of Upsala and Westeraas, and Henry, Bishop of Sigtuna (1134), was transferred to Westeraas.

The diocese consisted of the County of Nykoping, the County of Stockholm south of Lake Malar, and the southern half of the County of Orebro.
The bishop made him chancellor of the diocese and master of the cathedral school, and in 1520 he was ordained deacon and became canon of Strengnäs.
Among other institutions, there was in the diocese the chapter of the cathedral, funded about 1288, which counted thirteen members at the end of the fifteenth century, besides which there were a least eighteen chaplains, who served the eighteen altars.

The criticisms began when Hakan Långström, cathedral dean for Stockholm Diocese, announced his resignation because of the decision to fund and co-sponsor this exhibit.
“We relied on the diocese and arrangers to take responsiblity for the content of the exhibit.” In a late afternoon posting Friday, KT reported that Krook has issued a press release defending the exhibit and denying that it is pornographic.

There was a pastoral need for it in Stockholm, but another consideration was the statement of Bishop Gaertner that the forming of koinonias was a necessary first step for his holding ordinations and for the consecration of a “free” bishop.
Another reason quite clearly was that the election of a new Bishop of Stockholm was drawing near, and the Dean herself was one of the candidates for the position.

The bishop insisted that reaching out through commercial radio was not a business undertaking for the diocese, which did not mean to compete commercially with such enterprises as fast-food restaurants and clothing lines for the attention of young people.
Although his diocese is the first to go on the air, Ytterberg hopes the idea will spread.

In August 1817 a special vicariate of Revel (Tallinn) was established within the diocese of St. Petersburg and in May 1865 it was included in the diocese of Riga.
In 1947 in Stockholm, Rev. Yuri Vjaide created the so-called "Synod of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church in Exile" under the jurisdiction of the Patriarchate of Constantinople, whose declared purpose was to provide the Estonian Orthodox diaspora with spiritual care.
In August 1902 he was appointed ruling bishop of the diocese with the title of Bishop of Tallin and Estonia.

Parliamentary Ombudsman Nils-Olof Berggren has prosecuted the Bishop of Stockholm Diocese for failure to handle a case concerning public access to official documents in a correct way.
The Bishop was acquitted by the Court of First Instance, but the Court of Appeal found her guilty of negligant use of public power and imposed a substantial fine on her.
