It is the capital of the province Surat Thani.
Surat Thani is connected with Bangkok by the southern railway, even though the Surat Thani Railway Station is actually located Phunphin, about 15 km away from city.

The Sisters were founded in Ratchaburi Diocese in 1937 by Monsignor, later to become Bishop, Gaetano Pasotti, the then Salesian Vicar Apostolic of Ratchaburi.
They have 11 communities and are strongly involved in Surat Thani diocese where Bishop Prathan has been recently appointed.

The tasks of relief workers include identifying the victims, finding shelter for the thousands of families left homeless by the tidal wave, curbing the spread of disease, and feeding the hungry, the bishop reported.
The Thai branch of Caritas, known as Coers, is joining other Catholic agencies in a plea for donations and volunteers.
