Local priests say the Roman Catholic Diocese of Syracuse is moving in the right direction in reporting abuse to its parishioners, but an alleged victim of clergy sexual abuse says there still is a long way to go.
In the wake of a diocese report released over the weekend that stated 16 priests have been removed from ministry in the last two years, local Catholic leaders and alleged sexual abuse victims are divided.
In the Syracuse dioceses, of the 734 priests who have served in the diocese in the last 50 years, 49 have been accused.

James Lang was sitting in Bishop James Moynihan's office in Syracuse, N.Y., Feb. 4 when the bishop received a letter from 54 disgruntled priests expressing disappointment with his leadership and stressing that Moynihan's "unwillingness to listen and collaborate" would serve only to "diminish the effectiveness of your ministry with us."
Two weeks after receiving the letter, whose 54 signers represented a quarter of the diocese's active clergy, Moynihan met with 130 to 140 of his priests for more than two hours.
For Lang, the fact that the most liberal priest in the diocese could sit next to the most conservative monsignor and that neither left with a fl eye or bruised ego was as significant as the meeting itself.

On the Feast of All Saints last year, Catholics in the Diocese of Syracuse, New York, heard from their bishop about how he planned to deal with the declining numbers of priests and religious, shifting population patterns, and the resulting changes they could expect to take place in their local church.
The title and tone of the pastoral letter echoes St.Paul’s reflection on the gifts given by the Spirit to each in the Christian community to build up the body of Christ (Eph.4: 7,12) and recalls the Vatican II “Decree on the Apostolate of the Laity” and its renewed understanding that ministry is rooted in baptism.
Even as the number of its lay ministers increases, the Syracuse diocese is experiencing declining numbers of priests and religious.

 Bishop Accountability
Utica, NY - An internal investigation by the Catholic Diocese of Syracuse found "insufficient evidence" to substantiate allegations that the Rev. James Quinn sexually abused a youth more than 30 years ago, the diocese announced Wednesday.
Whenever allegations of sexual abuse are brought against a member of the diocese, church law dictates certain procedures must be followed to investigate, diocesan spokeswoman Danielle Cummings said.
Quinn also is facing another $150 million lawsuit in connection with the 1968 drowning of a 12-year-old boy at a church picnic that Quinn was supervising, but further action in that case depends on what happens with Zumpano's case, Policelli said.
