SPALATO - LoveToKnow Article on SPALATO   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
A large part of Spalato is actually within the limit of the palace; and many modern houses are built against its ancient walls and incorporate parts of them, not only on the inner but also on the outer side.
Architecturally the most important of the many striking features of the palace is the arrangement in the vestibule by which the supporting arches spring directly from the capitals of the large granite Corinthian columns.
The palace was transformed into an imperial cloth factory, and, as most of the workers were women, it became known as the gynaecium.

It appears to have been Diocletian's intention that whenever the place of either of the two Augusti became vacant, it should be filled by one of the Caesars, whose place in turn should be filled by a new appointment, thus securing a permanent, peaceful, and steady succession to the imperial authority.
The ministers of Diocletian were followed by a numerous body of guards and pioneers, who marched in order of battle, and were provided with all the instruments used in the destruction of fortified cities.

The construction of the palace marks the beginning of the city: emperor Diocletian ordered it built around 300, and in the 7th century - the giant building was long deserted - the first citizens of Split settled inside its walls.

Persecution in the Early Church - ReligionFacts
The last major Roman persecution of Christians occurred under Diocletian, and it was the worst of all.
It is known as the "Great Persecution." The reasons for this persecution are unclear, but Diocletians actions may have been based on the influence of his junior colleague Galarius (a fanatical adherent of Roman religion), Porphyry (an anti-Christian Neoplatonist philosopher), or the usual desire for political unity.
In actuality, the Diocletian persecution turned out to be extremely violent.
