Thermionic diodes are vacuum tube devices (also known as thermionic valves), which are arrangements of electrodes surrounded by a vacuum within a glass envelope, similar in appearance to incandescent light bulbs.
In vacuum tube diodes, a current is passed through the cathode, a filament treated with a mixture of barium and strontium oxides, which are oxides of alkaline earth metals.
The diode (originally a crystal diode) rectifies the AM signal, leaving a signal whose average amplitude is the desired audio signal.
