The Algarve Network - Silves   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Silves owes its existence to the navigability of the Arade River and to its strategic position atop a hill tat dominates a broad swathe of countryside.
Silves was never to recover its past splendor and for almost three centuries it was a city inhabited by only a few remaining citizens.
Silves played a role in the first phase of the discoveries, the daring voyages of exploration inspired and orchestrated by Prince Henry, the Navigator (1394-1460), who established the Algarve as a centre of maritime know-how.

It became an important city, a regional capital in one of the kingdoms of Taifa and a commercial and cultural center.
After a weak and ultimately doomed attempt to return Silves to Christian control by Sancho I, in 1189, Silves was definitively retaken by Alfonso III, in 1242, who then granted it a royal charter in 1266.
There was also the role played by Diogo de Silves who participated in the discovery of the Azores.

In addition it was a bishop of Silves who funded a caravel to explore the African coast, a Continent with which many important and prosperous trading links were established thereby continuing to support the importance of the Town.

His galley was given to Diogo Pires and his passed to a noble called Diogo Mendes.
Having boarded carelessly one fusta of Diu that seemed weakly provided, Diogo Mendes was suddenly confronted with a large group of well armed and resolute Turks, who had hidden on their approach, and that now invaded his ship and determined to take her.
Effectively, as soon as the “Espírito Santo" and the gale of Diogo Pires entered the channel to the inner harbour they started to be shelled by the fortress, by the seaward fort and by the rowing-ships of the enemy, suffering heavy damage from all.

Henry Moniz: ZoomInfo Business People Information   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Henry is sometimes said to be "son of Vasco Martins Moniz who was with King John in Ceuta in 1415, where he was knighted", but is placed here as a son of Diego Gil as these dates seem wrong and Diego Gil was in North Africa in 1425.
Henry seems to have died in 1470, for in June of that year a Henry Moniz paid 20 reis into the treasury, yet that September a license was granted to the guardian of Diego, the son of Henry Moniz, to take arms as the king's vassal.
It was apparently this Henry Moniz who sold the hereditary military governorship of Silves to Ferdinand Coutinho da Silva, Bishop of Silves, his mother's uncle.

The sea temperature also changes very little, varying between 16°C and 23°C. With such an all year round equable climate, the islands are perfect for many outdoor sports such as cycling, horse riding, golf, tennis, walking, climbing and all manner of water sports.
The islands were "discovered" and claimed for Portugal in 1427 by Diogo de Silves, but the first recorded mention of the Azores was in an Arabic manuscript dated 1145.
Many legends suggest that the islands were known to sea travellers even earlier than this and, inevitably, that the Azores is the location of the lost civilisation of Atlantis.

It is said that it was one of the King’s navigator’s, Diogo de Silves, who anchored for the first time in the Azores in 1427.
However, the first capitão donatário of Pico Island was Álvaro de Ornelas from Madeira Island, the son of Lopo Esteves de Dornelas and Maria de Ayala e Vasconcelos, relatives of Diogo de Silves, 1st Count of Portalegre.
Some historians state that the island’s first settlers were the ones who Captain Jos d' Utra, from Faial Island, sent to the island and docked in 21 September 1481.

In 1427 the pilot Diogo de Silves, possibly on a return voyage from Madeira, reached the islands that would eventually be named the Azores, but it was Goncalo Velho Cabral who is credited with the official discovery of the islands in 1431.
The seven islands were named the Ilhas dos Acores ("Isles of Hawks"), and within a year, the Portuguese had settled in.
Also known as the "Isle of the Seven Cities," Antilia was probably the most notorious of the nonexistent Atlantic islands.
