 | | Today the Diola tribe and others living in lower Casamance, Senegal are confronted by many adverse circumstances, leading to increasingly dire crises on all levels of life. |
 | | For example, while the Diola people have inherited a rich animist tradition that mandates their guardianship of indigenous rain forests, in the effort to meet immediate local subsistence needs, forests are being cleared to provide needed arable land and to make charcoal used for cooking. |
 | | In response, a comprehensive social, economic and environmental intervention is critical to the survival of the Casamance eco-system and the Diola people. |
