Dion DiMucci, better known as Dion, is an American singer-songwriter born July 18 1939 to a big Italian family in the Bronx borough of New York City.
Dion (at the time he was still with The Belmonts) was the fourth headliner on "The Winter Dance Party" tour and was approached to join the flight that killed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson; however the price of $36 was too much.
Dion had heard his parents argue for years over the $36 rent for their apartment and could not bring himself to pay an entire month's rent for a short plane ride.

 Bob Dylan Who's Who
Dion DeMucci, American rock singer from the Bronx.
'Dion regaled one songwriter panel with stories of touring with Buddy Holly, being introduced to blues records by John Hammond Sr (Dion demonstrated how he imitated John Lee Hooker's "Walking Boogie" to come up with "Ruby Baby") and how, through Hammond and producer Tom Wilson, he got to watch Bob Dylan make his early records.
Dion claimed that he and his musicians convinced Wilson to let them overdub an electric band on "Maggie's Farm" - and when Dylan heard it he decided to go electric (tales do sometimes grow a little tall at the Bottom Line).
