The voodoo plant, or sacred lily of India, Hydrosme rivieri, sends up its carrion-scented flower spathe in the winter without accompanying foliage, and although it has a revolting odor, the plant appeals to children.
Carnivorous, or meat-eating, plants are not the easiest to grow, but if you offer a helpful hand, your child may be successful with Dionaea muscipula, the Venus flytrap.
One way to grow this plant is to pot it in humus-rich soil combined with an equal part of sphagnum moss.

The Carnivorous Plant FAQ: Book list
Describes the physical characteristics of Dionaea and Aldrovanda, how they trap and digest their prey.
CPs included are: Byblis, Cephalotus, Dionaea, Drosera, Pinguicula, Utricularia, Nepenthes, Darlingtonia, Sarracenia, Heliamphora, and Genlisea.
No scientific names, no page numbering, a very excellent book on Dionaea for children (details its growth, its reaction to various foods and how to care for them at home), review CPN 10(2?), 1981, p.82-3 by S.E.Williams, see also CPN 19(1and2), 1990, p.32-40.

Also, Basilosaurus ("king lizard") turned out to be an early cetacean rather than a marine reptile upon closer examination.
The Venus Flytrap, Dionaea muscipula, might be more appropriately named something like Insecticaptrix muscipula or even Insecticaptrix carolinensis (Insect-taker/grabber (f., like planta), from Carolina).
An interesting conundrum is posed by organisms that have originated by symbiosis, since their phylogeny cannot be easily fit into a treelike topology.
