In Spain, from 1794, he proposed that he develop a topographical atlas of the peninsula, but this project - as also the publication of the accounts of the Expedition - did not come to fruition because of the suspicions which the fall of Malaspina brought, by association, on his most faithful collaborators.
The officer perished in the battle of Trafalgar, in command of the vessel Bahama.

Dionisio Alcalá Galiano (1762-1805) and Cayetano Valdes y Bazan (1767-1835) Spanish hydrographers in the schooners Sutil and Mexicana were the first to continuous circumnavigation of Vancouver Island and not George Vancouver (1757-1798) as is commonly believed.
In fact it was from the natives that Cayetano Valdes y Bazan (1767-1835) heard of a passage in 1791 to the sea from north of the Strait of Georgia.

The commanders of this expedition, Dionisio Alcalá Galiano and Cayetano Valdés y Flores, were instructed by Alejandro Malaspina, who had sailed to the Northwest one year before, and by the Mexican viceroy to explore the coast in the vicinity of Vancouver Island.
While most of this manuscript was probably compiled by Galiano from his own records, portions of the text were derived from information provided by other, and as yet unidentified, individuals.
English mariners in these northern waters are described at length in the journal, and Galiano and Valdés chanced to meet George Vancouver during their voyage; following the instructions of their superiors, they treated the Englishman with the utmost cordiality and briefly joined their expedition with his to conduct scientific surveys.

Galiano and Valdés were detached from Malaspina’s expedition to search for the Northwest Passage after Francisco Antonio Mourelle fell ill and was unable to take commmand of a voyage to the Strait of Juan de Fuca already planned by Viceroy Revilla Gigedo.
Galiano’s account of his 1792 explorations was published ten years later in 1802 by the normally secretive Spanish government as a counterpoint to the 1798 publication of George Vancouver’s extensive and precise charts.
Galiano Island is named for him, as well as a nature preserve on the north end of the island called Dionisio Park.
