  Pens
Quill pens made from the feathers of such large birds as geese, ravens, and swans were common during the sixth century B.C. Crow quills were used for fine line work and the name is still used today for its steel substitute.
The pen holder with nib, known as the dip pen, is still the most common pen for fine artwork and calligraphy.
Since the pen is loaded by dipping it into the ink, rather than through an internal reservoir such as that of a fountain pen, dried ink can easily be removed by cleaning or by redissolving in the same ink.

Dip pens were used by the scribes of the Egyptian kings over 4000 years ago.
Gold was substituted because it was impervious to the effects of the ink and dip pens with gold nibs became the preferred writing instrument.
These pens were a big improvement over the dip pen but they were not consistiently reliable.

 Pen Glossary: D
Dip pens can have nibs of steel or gold; based on the original 19th-century usage, the nib is properly called the pen, and the body is the holder.
A dip-less pen set comprises the pen and a desk base containing an inverted bottle or other large-capacity reservoir, arranged so that the contents of the reservoir can pool safely within the base, to replenish the pooled ink as it is used.
The pen could be fitted with a taper and used as a desk pen; this duofold use, however, is not the source of the name, which Parker chose simply to suggest that the pen was twice as good as its competition so that the customer was receiving duofold (doubled) value for his pen dollar.

Dip pens are also cheaper than fountain pens, and changing nibs is fairly easy, so artists can keep a number of nibs and holders handy, and switch quickly to what they need.
In most modern fountain pens, this is either a plastic cartrige, or a converter that allows you to fill the pen by dipping the nib in ink and pulling a lever (or similar - there’s lots of variations).
Parallel Pens are a novel take on the fountain pen - two plates are held very close together, and the ink flows between the two, rather than through a split in a single plate.

A pen is a writing instrument which applies ink to a surface, paper.

Even after the invention of fountain pens that were more or less (mostly less) reliable, the dip pen held sway for many years.
Today, dip pens find their greatest utility in the hands of people who have espoused the elegant round handwriting styles of the 18th and 19th centuries.
My interest in dip pens was piqued as a result of several requests to straighten sprung or creased dip nibs.

 On Selecting a Writing Instrument
Shorter pens, such as the Cross Ion and Fisher Bullet are easier to carry, but a pen that doesn't reach the web between your thumb and forefinger is going to be much harder to control than one that does.
Ballpoint pens use a thick paste ink which is melted by the turning of the ball and then laid down on the paper.
As with ball points, most pen makers have their own roller ball refills, which are used for every refillable roller ball pen they make (for example, Parker uses the same refill for its inexpensive Reflex rollerballs and its pricey Duofolds).

penspotters :: history of the pen
The pen parts were hand-lathed into shape from rods or tubes of hard rubber (usually obtained from specialist rubber manufacturers), and were decorated with machine engraving (chasing), or oftentimes clad in precious metals (overlays and filigrees).
The ballpoint pen, once debugged, was far less expensive and cantankerous than the fountain pen, and by the 1960s, the disposable "stick pen" (like the famous BIC) had relegated the fountain pen to a small corner of the market.
Pen shows, which used to be primarily hobbyist's swap meets, are now turning into big traveling showrooms for these products, and you can often get good deals on them at a show (as well as from internet dealers).

Some claim this to be the first true "fountain pen", because it uses a hollow barrel to hold a supply of ink.
The pen consists of a simple tube, with a threaded cap on one end, covering the nib, and another on the opposite end.
The cap on the barrel end has an oval seal, bearing the initials T J. To fill the pen, this end cap is removed (with the other cap in place!) and the barrel filled with an eyedropper or syringe.

 Dip Pen Nanolithography
Definition: A method for nanoscale patterning of surfaces by the transfer of a material from the tip of a scanning probe microscope onto the surface.
Dip Pen Nanolithography (DPN) is a method developed at Northwestern University for depositing thin organic films in patterns with feature sizes of around 10 nm (about 20 times better than the best optical lithography).
By coating an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) tip with an ink, the scientists are able to deposit well defined lines of the ink in a manner similar to a traditional ink pen.

Mind you, most fountain pen flex nibs won't be as flexy as your dip pen nib, but you can get close to that.
I have found some great flex-nibbed pens on ebay for less than $20, but of course I had to do the restoration myself and I couldn't be sure how flexy it was until I got the pen.
I am less familier with modern pens, but the only one that I think can even begin to compare with the vintage ones is the Namiki Falcon, and that sells for at least $120.

Enabling Nanofabrication through Dip Pen Nanolithography TM
Dip Pen Nanolithography, DPN TM, was discovered in the laboratory of Dr Chad Mirkin at Northwestern University leading to the founding of NanoInk, Inc. with a mission to develop, manufacture and advance the process of DPN to enable researchers demonstrate the viability of building structures on the nanoscale.
The DPN process uses a scanning probe as a ''pen'' which is coated with molecules or materials (the ''ink'') which is deposited to a substrate (the ''paper'') through a well-defined diffusion process.
To make this a truly viable manufacturing process, the single pen must be replaced by arrays providing for a scale up to enable speed and cost reductions to be realized.

In NanoInk's process, an AFM probe tip is dipped in a well containing deposition material and is scanned across a substrate.
When writing, retracted tips will not deposit material; when the array is being prepared by dipping the tips in wells, the retracted tips will not be coated.
Thus, a series of dipping operations could result in any arbitrary pattern of materials across the array of tips.
